I don't know the purpose of that either.Tha's a neat photograph. I wonder what the "lacing" system is on those boots? I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.
I think he is sitting on a wolf pelt.

Scout, buffalo hunter, gambler, lawman, boxing promoter & everything inbetween. From gunfighter to sports writer. What a life.

Been rereading the work of Masterson biographer Robert K. DeArment & he said there is no documented evidence that Masterson ever carried a cane, the idea that he carried one came from liberties taken in the fictional account written by Stuart Lake, & that Gene Barry picked it up from Lake's account. I put more in the cane thread. And then to have the suave and sophisticated Gene Barry portray you on TV. Never missed an episode.

DeArment just passed away in Jan @ age 95.
Looks like he ended up like Jesse.Alabama outlaw and train robber, Rube Burrow. It’s said that Rube, along with his brother Jim were heavily influenced by the exploits of Frank and Jesse James.

It looks to me very much like modern "speed" laces, i.e. eyelets closer to the toe, and hooks closer to the ankle.Tha's a neat photograph. I wonder what the "lacing" system is on those boots? I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.
I read One Ranger, & One Ranger Returns. And I did know but had forgotten that he died a few yrs ago.https://www.oaoa.com/news/local/wri...1e6-b5cb-e7a183b0a653.html?mode=image&photo=0
