There where all sizes of brims back in the day. As people where able to customize their hats purchased from hat shops who would cut down the brim for you if you did not like the size. Also the shorter brim was popular in the 20' and 30's.

I think it's an optical illusion. If you zoom in, you can see that the hat has a center dent and center-side pinches, so the angle makes it look like a tighter pinch. At least, that's what I think I'm seeing.

I see he wore Cuban heels. After a life of cowpunching it would have been hard to get used to anything else.
