Shave of the Day

Jakob, that Matador is a nice razor, and as always, great photo!

This is an all Tech week for me, thanks to a "challenge" posted at B&B by DeaconKC.

Gear: Gillette ball end Tech, no date codes
Dorco ST-300
VDH Deluxe soap
Tweezerman Brush

Prep: Neutragena Skin Clearing Shave Cream
Hot towel, two minutes

Shave: My usual routine: WTG, XTG, ATG with touch up

A fine shave, once again bordering on BBS, but I'm unwilling to do the extra touch up and blade buffing to get to true BBS...too much time and risk of irratation for the extra gain. I have started going ATG between the nose and upper lip, and am now getting very familiar with the swirling growth patterns below the jawline.

Post: Warm and cold water rinse
"Spice for Men" AS, a dollar store Old Spice clone
Old Spice Classic Cologne

I read that the cheap Old Spice AS knock offs are closer to the vintage Shulton product than the modern Proctor & Gamble formula. The kicker was when my wife rendered her verdict:

"Hmmm, you smell good! What's that you're wearing?"

When I told her it was Old Spice, she replied "No wonder it was so popular, is it considered retro-cool now?"

It is in our house!

I've been lurking on this thread for a while, but this is my first post here. Mostly because I don't have a "shave of the day" that I switch every day.

I currently use Haslinger soaps, that I get from Shavemac. I prefer the Sandelwood, Sage, and Aloe Vera.

I've used Muhle-Pinsel soap before, and really like the scent of their Aloe Vera soap, but have "technical problems" with it. The Haslinger soap will stick to the bottom of the soap dish after the first use. The Muhle soaps won't do that for some reason. When you try to work up a lather with your brush the soap rolls around in the dish, making it difficult.

Too bad, because I do like it. Perhaps the wooden bowl that they sell with it would fix that? I have a stainless steel dish that goes with the Haslinger soaps.

I also use Speick shaving cream, and after shave. The cream comes in a tube.

Welcome aboard Ranger!

I don't know if I can help you with the soap scooting phenomenon that you are describing. Though, I have heard of folks grating their soap down and then either melting or just adding a little water and tamping it down into their bowl of choice. Perhaps that would work for you?
Check out www.badgerandblade.com if you haven't already. There is definitely a tutorial there for the soap grating move.

Well,
the Tech was made from 1939 until 1973. Some photos of the head apart may help, as would any marking on the underside of the bottom plate.
Is the head actually gold plated, or does it seem to be brass?

3/3 :)

1921 valet auto strop
valet blade (shave #9)
williams soap
ever ready horsehair brush

dickinsons witch hazel

murray & lanman florida water

10 rounds on strop

the valet auto strop blades i have, still sealed, were dull. being theyre carbon steel, this is no surprise. ive found a way to revive them however. there really is something to this blade combined with the razor; the stropping DOES work. so for everyone who sees 2 or 3 of these razors in lots on ebay, they just might be worth it.

The tech handles had a problem with cracking, so it may explain why it ihas a black WW2 handle on it as those came with
a black finished head.
Used a aluminum handled Tech this morning by the way.
Derby blade
Col Conks Badger brush
Mama Bear's Soap
Old Spice AS
4 passes BBS with a gentle razor, wow these Techs are sweet.

Bonsoir

My usual shave tonight :

PRE-PREP : Half a bottle of Bordeaux Clairet (i'm sure I can take french economy out of crisis all by myself, sponsoring the wine industry with all my heart :D )

PREP : Nivea cream after an hot shower

SHAVE : Proraso cream / badger brush / Merkur progress / Merkur blade third use...4 passes : 2 WTG (progress set on 2) / 2 ATG (first set on 2 second on 4). Buffing to shape the pork chops (I can't manage to have the really exact shape on both sides. I'm sure a straight razor would be better for sharp details)

POST : Cold water and Weleda organic AS

Result : Pretty good shave BBS style. My skin is a little red, but, well, it must be my drinks. Fighting the recession with booze can cause colateral damages.

Amicalement, Bertrand, Bordeaux, France.

First shave ever with an Old Style. This razor was my first vintage Gillette, but due to it's alleged agressiveness and bad experiences with my Merkur Classic open comb, I was a little hesitant to put it to use.
This first time I only went WTG, two passes; despite a few nics at my neck the shave was much more comfortable than I had feared it might be - and the balance of the razor is superb. It definitly won't be the last time I use it.
