Jakob, that's a funny SOTD...lol

Perhaps Old Spice is poised to make a comeback!

SOTD:

Prep: Two minute hot towel over lathered face

Gear: NDC fat handle Tech
Dorco ST-301
Proraso cream

Four passes, BBS shave with one notable cut, my fault. Had to reach for the styptic pencil for the first time in quite awhile.

Post: Old Spice AS (generic dollar store version)
Old Spice classic cologne.

TopGumby: Thanks. Somehow I always feel like a buccaneer when I put on Old Spice :) For me Old Spice has never been out, though the new P&G formula is not as good as the old. I am looking into getting som of that old formula generic stuff that you have.

Regards.

This is what I used today, my standard gear. And I have a habit of listening to records while shaving (when I'm not in a rush:rolleyes: ). This time the legendary, lovely Patsy Cline:)

I'm giving the Rolls a rest for a few days while I work out this old-fangled method...

Prosaso soap (out of an old US canteen cup I found in a WWII site "up north" no less)
Old Kent pure badger brush
John Watts straight razor
Hone stone out of my Rolls Razor
Wide leather belt for a strop
Band aids on standby

My first time using a straight razor - 1 pass, no nicks or cuts, but not the best shave - It shaves hair on my arm, but I might need to spend more than half an hour honing it next time.

We're traveling this weekend, so I have my gold Fat handle Tech, Derby Blade, Omega brush and VdH Deluxe soap. Still got a very nice shave at the Drury Inn.

Somebody linked a 1957 article on the science of shaving over at Badger and Blade, and I thought I'd give the suggested prep a try. I was skeptical about anything approaching the effectiveness of my somewhat cumbersome hot towel over lather for two minutes prep, but the last couple shaves with the 1957 prep have been stellar.

Prep: Wash face with hot water and soap, working soap into beard with fingers. Rinse with hot water, re-soap the beard and leave the soap there.
Apply lather (today it was TRSC moisturizing cream) using brush and leave on for three minutes.

I used the time to brush my teeth, certainly more productive than gazing at the ceiling with the hot towel on my face.

Shave: Today I used a Gillette Red Tip SuperSpeed with a Dorco ST-301 blade. The WTG pass with soap and lather was quite smooth and glidy. Cool water rinse between passes, but I rinsed the razor in hot water. XTG and ATG passes also quite smooth. One minute nick on the neck after three passes from this supposedly aggressive razor. Cold water rinse left my face and neck blood free. BBS shave.

Post: I used a home brew after shave, a mixture of 15% alcohol witch hazel, generic Obsession cologne and a few squirts of genuine Obsession. My wife likes Obsession, and none of my existing AS products go with it. I really like the mix, but it was strange how the liquid turned cloudy after I added the witch hazel.

I think this will be my standard prep. The idea is that the soap strips the oil from the beard, allowing the lather to do the softening more effectively. Quite the opposite of the other approach I'd been using, where the idea was to leave natural oils on to assist with lubrication. The cool water rinses in between passes I'm not so sure about. It seems to work well, but I miss my hot water.:p

Three passes, BBS, on little weeper on the chin where I zigged when I should have zagged.

I'm starting to think that Red Tip SS is "The Razor" for me.
