The Cockpit USA coat is made with the same type of material as the Schott 740...32 oz. 80% Melton wool/20% nylon fabric.

Sterlingwear is no more. Yes, they were the contractor for the Navy peacoats for years, but since 1980 all of their coats have the Melton shell. You really want the Kersey shell.

No one. Your only option for the far superior Kersey is a vintage US Navy peacoat.
I have bought quite a few used US Navy Peacoats in very good to Excellent condition. What size are you? if you are a common size ( 36, 38, or 40 ). you could find Many coats on Etsy and eBay. Ain't no such thing as a new Kersey US Navy Peacoat. any longer. The only ones available are used
Actually USN peacoats during the 70s, with a few exceptions, were Kersey coats. The changeover to Melton happened in 1980. The exceptions during the 70s are usually noted on the tag. Most of the exceptions will state, "Melton" wool. A few will merely say, "100% Wool." Hold out for one that unequivocally states it is Kersey.
Question for Peacoat and Spoonbelly: Did the thickness/weight of the Kersey wool change over the years? I put on a 1969 Kersey and also a WW2 Kersey when I visited one of our esteemed members. They wool looked similar, yet the WW2 wool seemed to be a little more plush. Subjective, just feel, not measured in any way. Did the Kersey wool remain 32 oz. up through the end of the Kersey coat production?
There may be some variation in the finish of the coat during different contracts to various suppliers over the years, but the objective weight remained the same.
What is your size? There are several Kersey peacoats on Etsy right now, various conditions.
Im a 41 inch chest so either a size 40 or 42
I would look into a 42. There aren't many that showup on eBay or Etsy. in those sizes. Though they are more common than the larger sizes. Ask the sellers if they can give you the measurements of the coats. There are real nice coats to be had out there.
