Hello, I am new here and I hope I posted this in the right place.

I have been looking for a new fedora and need some help. You guys seem to know much more than myself about this subject. I have been looking for a fur felt fedora that will allow me to roll up the brim in the front. The Cristy's Foldaway and Adventurer look nice, but I have never seen anyone wear them in the style I intend to. I like the idea of being able to bash the hat easily, which these two allow, but once I get the hat the way I want, I would like for it to stay. The adventurer look great, but I do not want it to look like the Indiana Jones hat. I have nothing against the style, I just don't prefer it. Would the adventurer look good with the brim up? I am also concerned with the crown height on both of these. It seems that they may be too tall for the look I am going for. I am sure you guys have seen these two models many times, but here they are:

Since I plan to roll the front brim up, do you guys know of any other types of hats that will suit this style better? I am open to suggestions you might have. You all seem very knowledgeable and I trust your opinions. Please let me know what you think, and feel free to share any advice you may have.

Thanks!

Also, I thought I would just add that I don't want a hat to look formal. I don't wear suits and do not want a hat for that purpose. I usually wear khakis or cords and long sleeved cotton flannel shirts. I am a musician and painter, and like to wear my brim up so I can see. I also quite like the look of rolling the brim up. Also the color I am wanting is the color of the adventurer I posted. I'm not sure what it is exactly, maybe a light sable or cork? I look forward to hearing from you guys!

When you say you want the front brim "rolled up", do you mean:

(a) snapped up in front?

or

(b) "flapped up" so that the front of the hat looks like an upright flap, like you see in some of the old westerns?

well no snap involved. Sort of the opposite of your avatar, except more so. I don't really know how to explain it, I couldn't find any google images of what I am talking about. I guess flapped up, is what its called. I have seen it in older movies before. Ive also seen films with prisoners wearing them that way while outside working.

From what I've read, the foldaway might be too soft to roll up in the front like that. If you're snapping the brim up, it will not look like an Indy hat. Although, you'll probably still get a few comments based on it being a brown hat.

Hello, and welcome!

By what you say, I would think you need a hat in a modern style, which have, generally speaking a lower and more tapered crown; and probably with not too much of a brim.

This would rule out the Adventurer because, it being in the Indy style, is of more classic dimensions. Christy's offers various hat models which answer to the requirements I have assumed you would like, and I believe they have them in a variety of colours, including those you mention for the Adventurer, in different dimensions and ribbon styles, etc.

The Foldaway is of a modern style; it is designed to be crushable, rolled and stowed, hence it is softer than a regular hat. It has a cloth sweatband. If you do not need the rollable qualities, choose another model.

HTH. Regards!

I own a few modern fedoras, but they all have very small brims. Yes they curve up, but I was hoping to find something with a much larger brim than I could bend.

For the upward flap, you'll probably want a hat with some body to it, so I think the Folder will be too soft. A hat with a snap brim would have to have the brim reshaped using steam or water. The stiffener in the brim will reset when the brim cools, helping to hold it in place. If that doesn't hold, you can buy spray stiffener to help hold it.

So, of the two you posted, the Adventurer is the better choice. However, perhaps you could ask for the "Fedora" model, but with an open crown. The crown is lower, and it will get you away from the "Indy look."

I think the color shown on the Adventurer is either Sable or Light Sable. Contact Hornet Hats. They will probably know.

Oooooh, you're talking about a kind of Seth Briar (of Red Dead Redemption) kinda brim:

I'm not sure you're going to find many fedoras that have that capability. Also, many fedoras have "snap" brims, that stay up or down, and can be flipped as such with the hand. Sort of like a hinged visor made of fur, I guess.

I suppose a wide-brimmed hat may be able to do this, but you'd have to work it quite a bit.

Im not sure what "snapping up" a brim means. I assume you dont mean an actual snap. care to explain?

A snap brim, when "at rest" or while stored, has the same even upward curve all around.

Then, the wearer pulls the front down, or "snaps" it.

A snap brim is just stiff enough to give the brim some spring, to go up and down easily. Too stiff, and it won't move. Too floppy, and it just... well.. flops. ;)

finally, I found one sort of like what I want!

Do you guys know of any models sort of like this? I believe this hat had a rounded bowler-ish crown, but if there is one that can be shaped a bit that would be perfect!

That's a MUCH better picture than the creepy one I provided. That's what I figured you were talking about.

I tried "flapping" up the near 3'' brim on my Akubra Campdraft, and I cannot for the life of me achieve this effect. I think you may be looking for a fairly wide-brimmed hat, and I definitely don't think you're going to find a fedora with the dimensions you're looking for.

Maybe one of the Akubra hats would work, one of the wide-brim kind. In the picture you have a "dimensional" brim meaning it's wider at the front than on the sides. You might have to have someone cut the Akubra brim to suit. How you get it to stay flap up with that wide brim, I don't know. You can get spray stiffeners, maybe that's the solution. Anyway Google on Akubra hats and look at some of their country hat varieties (as opposed to the dress hats). I don't know the models very well--maybe the Banjo Patterson or something like that is your hat?
