do you know of anything the least bit close?

I'm pretty interested in this myself, so I'll do a little research and keep you updated.

It'll definitely be some kind of western hat.

You know, now that I'm thinking clearly, you might wanna contact Major Mike Moore of Buckaroo Hatters. I'm pretty sure he can help.

I'll see what I can do in the meantime.

The only option I can see is to find an Akubra hat or a Boss-of-the-Plains style of hat.

I think you'll have to "train" the brim. I still cannot find after an hour or so of searching, any type of hat (you know, that you can buy) that matches what you're looking for.

I still think you're best bet is to talk to Buckaroo Hatters.

Here's what I've found so far:

You should be able to steam the brim of a hat up like that. Just put a kettle on, and hold the brim in the steam for a little while, and shape it how you want with your hands.

Edit: this will only really work on a fur felt hat. I have tried reshaping wool hats, and it doesn't work very well.

Hey thanks for all the help! It seems that this mysterious fedora I am searching for has lead me and you to cowboy hats. I guess there isn't anything that really fits my criteria. I dont want a "country" hat though. I want something more modern. Do you think the adventurer will work in the slightest? What I mean is, can the crown be shaped in a way that will decrease its height - by folding it in to make it sort of flat on top will ridges? Also, will the brim easily reshape upward? or at least allow me to work it that way over time?

again, thanks for all your help.

I think the unbound brim of the adventurer could give you a bit of trouble, but it might work. Also, I have not heard that much good about its durability.

A lot of folks around here swear by Akubra, and they do make pretty good hats. You might want to take a look at them. They have a great line of fedoras, which are tough as nails and look good. The Squatter is good, and can be bought open crowned so you can shape it how you want, and the Campdraft, though a bit more country, can be citified by shaping it they way you want also.

And yes, you can definitely lower the crown of a high-crowned hat by changing the shape, maybe putting in a diamond or teardrop, or telescope crease.

Any fur felt hat ought to let you work the brim up. Try getting it a bit wet (with a spray bottle) or using steam.

thanks! I looked at those two on the akubra site. I will keep those in mind. I think I am going to try and go another way. It seems like the one I have in my head is nonexistent. I will just try to find one and work with it using the method you have posted. I really like the type of fedora jakob dylan wears. do any of you know what type it is?

It seems to have a low crown, which i really like, and a big brim. Perhaps I could steam it to achieve the desired effect?

EDIT*

I found another picture where he is wearing one sort of like I was talking about.

Know what this might be?

That's pretty much a fedora with the brim snapped fully up. I can do the same with my Akubra Campdraft, it's a very Huckleberry Finn kinda vibe.

It could very well be a Euro-style fedora, they seem to have wider brims and lower crowns.

That looks like a pretty classic fedora. I wouldn't really say that that first one is low crowned. Also, most brims come up like that, and you have to snap them down in the first place

But if you want low crowned, big brimmed...

Yeah that's a nice one. I own several plain old wool fedora's. I just want to buy a nice fur felt and make it my main hat. Making my mind up is hard, because I plan on spending a good bit of money. I just need to commit. I am too fickle. One minute I want a 1949 gold rush miner's bucket hat, and the next a generic fedora. Choices choices...

If you plan on spending a good amount of money...

Get in touch with Art Fawcett and make a custom. He will help you through the design, and you will get a hat that is unique to you, and of incomparable quality.

I absolutely agree. If you're willing to spend quite a bit of money, go custom. If you wanna be cheap and still get fur, go Akubra.

...That's about as far as my hat knowledge takes me lol.

I think the Dylan hat is actually higher crowned than it appears, because the
brim is flipped up. I kind of like that look too for certain occasions. I think you could take an Akubra Campdraft, like Neophyte's, put a diamond crease in it, flip up the brim, and end up with a hat much like Dylan's.

If you decide you have more $$ to spend, you could have one of our nice hatmakers make you a replica. One of the members had a great Johnny Depp style hat made by Mr. Fawcett.

By the way,

Just googled Jakob Dylan's hat, saw a "Dylan Hat" by Worth and Worth fur felt for only $425:rolleyes: Looks like a Hillbilly hat if you ask me, and I think the price is outrageous for an unformed hat. You may as well get an exact
custom replica for that price!

Good one. Which hat is that? The front brim flip up is a good touch.

It's my Willow Green Squatter. I don't wear it up like that, but I just wanted to show that it could work. I generally have the hollywood brim swoop.

That Worth & Worth jakob is pretty neat. Do you know of a hat similar in look, but VERY different in price?

Akubra Campdraft or Akubra Bushman, at http://www.hatsdirect.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?view=50&returncat=Fedora+Hats&returnpage=0 and http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=81, respectively.

It would be helpful to know what color and what kind of usage (formal, casual, etc.) you're looking for. The Campdraft comes in Silverbelly/Estes Tan, Taupe Fawn/Camel, Bluegrass Green (from EverythingAustralian.com.au), and Glen Gray, where as the Bushman (which I myself am interested in) comes only in Nullarbor Tan, which I haven't seen in person.

Jungleman,

I think Neophyte has nailed it on the Dylan Hat. If you look at the Bushman, you can form the crown lower or higher as you like, and the brim is fairly wide,
much like the Worth hat. The difference is several hundred dollars, and you can even steam or "water train" the brim with an upward tilt to it. The biggest drawback is limitation on color, but I personally like the tannish color of the Bushman, I think it approximates Jakob's hat color. It's a start anyway to wearing a hat you like, if you want later you can get something more expensive.
