Pulling the trigger on new aero jacket!

Hello!

Tonight, I’m planning on pulling the trigger on my first Aero jacket. I will be purchasing through Thurston Bros for convenience and fitting, so some things may change in my plan as I go through their fitting process.

The current plan is to get a relaxed fit Aero Highwayman in black CXSH with black quilted lining. My goal is to make it feel like a molded, weighted blanket when putting it on. I’m hoping to keep it for the rest of my life, and even if I gain or lose weight, I’m hoping the relaxed silhouette will make it an easy grab for any outing. I’m also planning to ask them to schedule or delay the manufacturing process such that I can receive the jacket later in the year. I want to open it on my birthday, so that the jacket will have the same birthday as me!

Let me know if you have any tips or suggestion. I’m very excited! Also, I need some validation that it’ll be worth all the money, and that’ll make me more excited lol. Part of me feels it’s a little bit of an extravagant birthday, but I think it will have a lot of sentimental value to me.

Thanks everyone for reading.

congrats on the Aero, I love my Highwayman jacket.
be carefull as you attempt to pull off the fit you describe as the highwayman is already fairly boxy and can look oversized when worn, even in the correct size.

This is Not the way..

I have bought two of my Aeros through Carrie and had good experiences both times. She will send you a fit jacket that takes all of the guesswork out of the fitting process.

Just one tip: When you get it, resist the temptation to put conditioner on it, please. It won't need anything for 20 years or so. I have never put conditioner on any of my jackets, other than my MC jacket that I frequently wear in the rain. The oldest is probably over ten years old and needs conditioner like I need an extra 10 pounds.

Good luck. HWM sizing is a science in itself.

Would grab a Lost Worlds Suburban instead if I was US-based or in either scenario a Vanson Ike..

In my view, CXSH is the better choice than CXFQHH, which many people (including myself) would prefer for their first jacket.
Heavy leather goes well with the Highwayman.
But I won’t hide the fact that heavy leather is no longer my first choice. The longer I wear my jackets, the more I prefer the lighter, softer leather. But for a Highwayman, I’d probably go for CXSH too ;)

I am trying to think ahead in terms of other jackets I would want so I don’t get too many overlapping/redundant jackets.

I eventually want to get a shearling jacket, maybe B-3, to wear in super cold temperatures — as far as jackets with lighter horsehides, I was thinking I’d probably end up wanting to get a Shinki horsehide jacket. So for this aero, I thought it made sense to go for the heavyweight leather. And I feel like it’s a sort of rite of passage to break in a heavy Horween leather jacket haha

At the risk of repeating what others have said. I have experience with two custom orders from Aero, one from Scotland and one thru Carrie (Thurston).
I would urge you to make them stick to the measurements you give - both jackets were made longer than I requested and it detracted from the "look" I wanted.
That being said Carrie is great and will take good care of you.

Good choice for your first jacket. My first “proper” jacket was also an Aero (Premier Highwayman in steerhide). One piece of advice I would give is to make the sleeves a bit longer than you think you need. For my first jacket I measured a fabric jacket and asked for shorter sleeves as I didn't want the sleeves to go beyond my wrist bone (I don't ride). Over time the thick CXL leather developed rolls and the sleeves shrank about an inch. That’s especially annoying with slim cuffs as it now prevents me from raising my arm or wearing a watch underneath.

When I first bought it, considering the cost, I told myself I would wear it for the rest of my life. It’s been five years and I have since bought about ten more leather jackets. It’s definitely an addiction :)

At a time Thurston's house specs for Aero jackets were 1" longer than Aero's standard. Not sure if that applies to customs they order as a starting point, worth clarifying.
