Thanks Bowen. I have never owned a BRE before. Too hard to find & too rare to pass up even though it doesn't fit me. I just had to experience it & possibly safe it...who knows?

I just bought a Siren Song Black Nutria for the same reason. I swore off more hats but those really really special ones...different story.

Auerbach & Guettel's The Palace was open from 1888 into the 1960's. I believe one of the Auerbach's was big in early Kansas state politics also.

I had one like yours that was a touch older and tan. Also a 7 1/8, it had shrunk a little and was just too small. Definitely nice felt and that brim treatment is hard to beat.

It had a bunch of moth bites and was barely too small - just didn't quite work. I sold it 8-9 years ago.

That's a great find. The 1X Nutria mark doesn't show up often. 1920s era I think. But then there's that silver foil. No Fray mark?
