Willoughby - Forest Green Heather
4 3/8 Crown as shaped
1 3/4 Dark Green Grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/8 brim with triple stitched over welt

I received an offer to purchase this Willoughby hat, that I had seen “bobbing in the ‘bay” for a bit, for just $16 and I could not say no to that deal. Right out of the box two things were apparent. First any concern I had about size was eliminated when it fit perfectly on my head and second.. the color of the felt was a much deeper darker green than in the photos. What appeared as a lighter heathered green or maybe a bit teal was actually darker forest green heather felt and a very dark green grosgrain ribbon. Quite happy about that as it is unlike anything else in my collection.

The felt is fairly dense and somewhat stiff with a medium hand to it. The 2 1/8 brim is nicely finished with a triple stitched over welt. There is no liner but I suspect it likely had one originally as there is no crown tip logo and the felt does not feel to be of the lighter weight summer composition. The 2 1/4 in sweatband is of the reeded variety taped in the rear seam and sewn in through the front side of the band with a single thread. My only other Willoughby has an unreeded sweat.. but I suspect this hat is older based on the depth of the sweat imprint. But I don’t have much else to go on with no tags under the sweat.

The look in the last collage, top right. Charlie will likely sue you for breach of copyright!
Love the hat.

HA! I was going for the Steve look… but you are right definitely Charlie too. Steve manages to pull off “dastardly“ debonair with his version…. While Charlie maintains a glow of innocent charm. Mine is.. well…. it’s there.

See this old thread. I don't think they were hat makers, more hat suppliers.

I found this Resistol Stagecoach yesterday. I expect it to be a project hat, but for now it’s just quirky enough and has enough personality that I’m going to leave it alone for awhile. I enjoy the asymmetry.

Certainly worth it, Je. We won't mention the colour, but you've got yourself a nice Willoughby there. They sourced from various manufacturers, so without a label it's impossible to say who made the hat.

Stefan very kindly gifted this replica bicorn military hat with adorning feathers. Not something you see every day.

And yes, Robert @GHT that is a Blue Peter badge, and I am indeed the very modern model of a modern major general

If that one doesn't get your orders obeyed, nothing will.

Porkpie and sunglasses? Are youmoving into Heisenberg territory, Randy? Looks good on you by the way.

WAY behind in documenting hats, so I'll start with some appetizers. A waning crescent moon phase calls for a crescent moon vented Tirard:

So cool!

I received the Super Barbisio today. It's modern, but the felt is great. Unfortunally the brim is too small for my taste, so i don't know if i keep this one..... we will see! ;-)

Very nice looking felt, but sometimes a hat just isn't the one for us.

This one came in this week.
Motsch castor natural stingy brim fedora in a brown colour called Cuba. Size 57 with the overwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Excellent felt with a nice hand and very nicely finished. I have other hats with a 5cm brim which don't look and feel stingy, but this one does. It's just not the hat for me. Haven't tried to clean out the two spots in the ribbon yet.

Thank you Stefan. That makes a lot of sense with various sourcing.
