Lord Biltmore | Sky-Rider
Soft Light-weight light grey felt
4 3/4 crown as shaped (about 5 open)
1 inch silver grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with bound edge
Carter removable sweatband system

Second of the five Canadian hat stack. If yesterday I went with the hat that needed the least work… today is the one that probably needed/needs the most. However was likely one of the finest of the bunch when new. Which is why this one looks like it got some wear. Very dirty from doffing stains on the crown as well as what appears to have been a hole worn clear through the brim…. Probably from holding the hat between two fingers. It appears a repair was attempted at some point as the hole was held together with a glob of glue that is starting to fall off. I started off giving a good brushing to the felt..l followed by working over the felt with a dry hat sponge to try and remove some of the discoloration.

I then made my first attempt at repairing the patch. After sanding down the old glue patch. I used some ideas I got from Robert @belfastboy . I used sandpaper on the felt to collect my own loose felt. I sprayed some spray adhesive onto a paper plate and collected it onto a toothpick and slowly spread glue where it needed to go. Starting with the toothpick I dabbed loose felt into the glue area and continued to dab and pack and pat more loose felt into the blob of glue and felt. Let dry.. sand down and repeat.

The hat itself.. other than the 1 inch ribbon… has specs similar to the Stratoliner… it is a super light weight and very malleable felt. One very special feature it includes the Carter Cushioned Leather removable Sweat system that you see old old Stephen L Stetson

I’m not sure if I made it better or worse. LOL. I may continue to work on this as I may have better results with more patience and drying time.

Master Biltmore
Light weight soft lighter brown felt
Approx 4 3/4 Crown as Shaped (about 5 1/2 Open)
Just under 2 3/4 brim with bound edge
3/8 Chocolate brown grosgrain ribbon

Third hat from the Canada stack I chose because I really just want to wear it tonight. The Master Biltmore really only needed a good brushing to get rid of dust and cob webs. What a beautiful color scheme… I’m almost hesitant to describe the felt color as it changes so much in light. A light brown.. maybe pecan color that shifts darker indoors and the ribbon and brim binding a darker brown color. In some light it gives off an almost heathered look. The hat is unlined… though it may have once hat a liner. It is styled in Stratoliner/Open Road fashion. Considering the very soft lighter weight felt I’d lean more toward Strat. I just have not come across many TAR in this color way so I am very happy with this hat!

A bargain priced antique shop find yesterday. A Dobbs Cameron in Dawn (mid-grey with a nice blue tint). I have not heard of a Cameron model. Perhaps you have seen one Joe? @Blare

This one has a short 2 inch Guild Edge brim, a 2 inch black ribbon, and a Cushion Aire sweatband. This hat was sold at Lyttons and comes with a nice Lyttons hat box rather than a Dobbs box. I was hoping it was older but the Hatted Professor puts this one squarely in the 60s.

A lot of great things came from the 1960s, if I do say so myself. ;)

Nice stingy. I think this and Joe’s are the only Camerons I’ve seen.

Let's start off the new year with a nice one. It did come in last year, but I only could take pictures of it this morning. Here it is.

Borsalino fedora in black. Size 6 with the stitched brim at 5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Unlined and vented and weighing only 65 grams (with leather sweatband) it is an ancestor to the 50 grammi hats Borsalino has in its line-up today. The label gives it away as being made in 1978.

Happy New Year! I am happy to be back in the land of the living — my first post since testing positive for Covid on December 23. I’ve had better Christmas’s but I’m feeling lucky to have some time with my family now and excited for the new year.

This was my Xmas present to myself and my last hat purchase of 2022–a 1940s Stetsonian. More photos in The Stetsonian Institution.

Wishing you all a wonderful 2023!

Cheers,

David

What a nice thin felt. I love the vent holes

RBH

Bartender
Thoroughbred 10X from some time in the later years of Beaver Brands. The sweatband markings are pretty bad compared to older hats. I do like the style and the venting on the sides though.

Bob, cool to see this.

Major Moore bought the vent stamp when we were at the Beaver Brand auction.

Come to think of it I have not seen it in awhile. I hope it was mot misplaced during the move to the new shop.
Back to the vent... It is the same Beaver Brand used on the Banana Republic safari hat.
