Thank you Bill @buler for passing on this beautiful Borsalino. I’ve wanted a hat with these colors—best seen on the closeups below—for a long time. I especially like it because it reminds me of this 1930s Dick Tracy cover that I’ve had framed in my house for years. Can anyone give me specifics for date based on the interior labels?

Enjoy your Tuesday!

David

Gorgeous hat, David. Could you perhaps take another pic of the label, more straight on? Might be that both the colour and model name are ones we haven't seen before.

Mayser "Grosser Preis" / M. Mertés Hutfabrik, Jnh. Max Hecht Nürnberg 8 , measures 58.5 cm, possibly late 1920s early 1930s (this based on a February 3, 1932 Newspaper Sweatband Spacer). This one is difficult to date because of the non matching Liner and Sweatband plus no Paper Label. I tend to think it was made by Mayser Ulm based on the construction, components and Felt are of very high quality. I have collected some information but have to do more research. It's rare to find a Mélange Stiff Felt. I believe this is Fur Felt because of the very soft hand but it might have some Wool in the mix. The Mélange is mostly different shades of Gray maybe a tinge of Red other unknown Colors. The Finish is some what roughly clipped so Flamand Velour like. This is one of my better recent finds. As I mentioned it's difficult / rare to find this type of Stiff Felt.

I bought this Whippet a few months ago. It was cheap because it was trashed -- dirty, sweatband in tatters, halfway stretched from a 7 to a 7 1/8, ribbon stained and faded, binding stained and greasy looking.

I sent it to @bond and just got it back. Can not believe how good it looks. Gas bath, new sweat, new ribbon -- it almost looks like a new hat and it is going to get tons of head time. Thank you, sir!

David

Two vintage Stylepark Templeform 7 1/2 I recently picked up. I took a chance on the fedora on Ebay for the photos looked poor and the seller was a jerk in his responses. But for $29, I got one of the best deals around. Gambles like this don't always pay off. The homburg I picked up from Rabbit. It is a 7 1/4, but for $68 plus $20 post, it was worth popping the stitching on the band, snipping the reed, and stretching up a size.

B! Wear Cap. Co. The man behind the brand is Brett Stiles and he made me this eight panel cap from a sport coat I found in a thrift shop. The material is 60/40 wool and silk. This is my second cap from him where I requested the fuller cut, a $10 premium. The entire custom cap set me back $50. I didn’t even have to pay for shipping as I picked it up from Brett personally when he walked down to get his mail. :)

Here’s a heartbreaker. NOS Champ Playboy clone in a beautiful green/gray featherweight felt. Very cool details. Picked it up for cheap and it arrived today. As I took it out of the box I thought to myself—I can’t believe how perfect this hat is. How is this possible? It’s never been worn.

Well—mystery explained. The tension of forming to a human head puts these ridiculous waves on either side of the brim.

Is there a solution to this problem? Would reblocking and flanging offer hope? Seems unlikely unless the block was my head.

If not—anyone here wear a 7 1/8 wide oval and want to give it a shot?

David

I wouldn't perhaps call those waves ridiculous, David. They're definitely not usual, nor what is "normal", but they are quite interesting to look at. Go with the flow, I'd say.

You guys are making me laugh! Looks even stranger with the brim up—stands straight up like Yosemite Sam. o_O

Pretty sure I’ll be passing this on. It might actually work for someone that’s a size 7 with enough hair to fill it out but not stretch the sweatband.

I think they are pretty interesting as well. How does it look brim up?

I kinda like it with that look. It’s different but not too much - if that makes sense?
