Nothing new.... only wishing I'd got something. While in Mississippi, passed up a beautiful straw summer weight Stetson at Shankerman's in Clarksdale. And later in Memphis still another beautiful straw Dobbs at Lansky's in the Peabody Hotel. Too late now; man what was I thinkin'? Stupid is as stupid does. :oops:

Now I'm even more disappointed in myself. After deciding to search online for the "one that got away", seems finding it is no problem. But the Dobbs Rialto Shantung is at least 10 to 15 dollars more than what I saw at the Peabody Hotel and this does not including shipping. Lesson: Never pass up something you like, when you see it, regardless the situation. Duh! But does sound like another excuse to go back to Memphis. :cool:

5 3/4” open crown, 4 5/8” raw edge brim. The brim shape (flared bumpers) is a result of forcing the 7 1/2 hat onto my 7 5/8 long oval head. The crown is soft and holds any dry crease I want to put on it. The sweat is soft and very supple, but the surface is beginning to flake off in places. I’m not sure if the band is original, and it isn’t attached and relies solely on the friction to hold it on the crown (I suspect it was added later).

Hi

I went by Buckaroo Hatters in Covington Tennessee to pick up a couple of hats, a Black Quigley and another rough rider hat. Four because I have a Bone one that I wear in the summer for dress, a tan one that's just a touch small, a much later tan one for dress, and I needed another for wearing around (replacing the small one). I have a tan Quigley shaped one in Tan and wanted a winter version.

I suggest going to a hat shop, Mike and Rocky fit the hat to your head with lots and lots of steam (in the hat). I also suggest eating breakfast at the Bald Butcher in Covington, you wont be hungry for a while. Erwin's is also good.

Looking good! I have 3 hats from Mike, he does a great job. We always eat at the Court Square Cafe on the opposite side of the square. Great food! Its almost worth the trip for that alone. Perhaps next trip we will try the Bald Butcher.

Aurel Huber "Antilope", 59cm possibly mid 1950s. I have been looking for an older Aurel Huber for a long while. They were originally a famous Straw Hat Factory in Lindenberg, Germany (see Mayser Milz & Cie, Ottmar Reich, ect). I think they started Felt Hat production prior to WWII but increased production + add felt production post WWII. Many ex J. Hückel´s Söhne (Czechoslovakia) ended up working for Aurel Huber post WWII. I am not sure why it's so difficult to find older Aurel Huber hats but this one is fantastic. The Antilope finish is great and the felt easily dry creases. I am not sure if the vents are original but they lineup properly so highly possible.

A new-to-me NOS Shudde Bros. thin ribbon with wind trolley. This thing is so smooth and so light, it is amazing. I don't know whether to call this a feather weight or an air weight, it weighs hardly a thing and dry creases to any shape with ease. It is one of the very few hats I have every found that actually looks good on me with an open crown, so I may just leave it alone! (But, it is hard to see an open crown and not want to dig your fingers into it, right?)

It has a 5 3/8 open crown (the top "droops" a little, so I'm sure it was made as a 5 1/2) with a 2 7/8 bound brim.

The only writing on the hat is on the back of the sweat with a stamp that says "R.C. & Co. Leathers with the Chamois colored back". The sweatband is soft, pliable leather and it is butted together with what looks like a small piece of tape on the back and a stitch or two of white thread holding it together.

The previous owner suggested, based on the quality and construction, that it might be a 50's or 60's vintage. I hope some of you Shudde aficionado's will chime in. (To be truthful, I not yet searched TFL for any info.)
