Hückel chamois in hgrau (that would be hellgrau - lightgrey). Size 56, with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at just short of 10cm at the pinch. This one works both brim up (Bob Roberts style) or brim down (everybody else). Gorgeous felt on this hat and high quality finishing.
I don't appreciate feathers (or pins for that matter) on my hats in general, but this one will stay: tiny blue jay feather.

I like the looks of that Hückel. I would say the feather compliments it well!

Couldn’t be happier. Auction house hat arrived today. This hat was sold from an estate and not from the Monte Cristi. It Fits perfectly, came in original box, and appears flawless. It was listed at auction for $495 starting bid. A few seconds before the online auction was about to end there were no bids, so I threw out a lowball bid of $100. An hour later I get an email saying my bid was accepted, add $25 for S&H.

I emailed photos of the hat to Monte Cristi in Santa Fe and enquired as to the original cost and year it was made, and asked as to how much to clean and block one of their fine panama hats. I received the following email:

Mr. Larson: Is there a name or initials on the leather inside the hat, or beneath the sweatband a set of possibly five numbers? Without more information we can only tell you that it has been a long time since we used that particular leather. The value of the hat and band today is approximately $1450 plus. That is if there are no breaks in the crown or brim. Complete renovate to size $400. Milton

This '50s Cavanagh arrived today.

It's listed as a 7 3/8 but fits like a dead-on 7 1/4 which is fine for me.

I didn't really know what color it was going to be. It looks kind of light green in the etsy pictures. In my pictures it looks tan or gray in each of the pictures below (yes, that's the same hat).

It is actually sort of a moonstone gray. The felt is soft and pliable and holds its crease, as a quality 1950s hat should.

The hat is immaculate inside and out. It fits perfectly, and has the Cavanagh proportions I like so much.

I feel I got a great hat, especially for the price.

My order from Sunbody arrived yesterday. Problem is, this isn't the hat that I ordered! I wanted a medium crown cattleman. Obviously this is a Gus, I'm guessing their low crown. I measured the crown at the crease in the back, and it's at about 5". They say the cattleman is 4 3/4" at the crease. I'm debating whether I should soak and rebash it, or try getting the proper one.

I don't mind the Gus at all, but I would prefer a bit of a higher crown if I did so. I actually contemplated getting one, but I would rather have a cattleman or fedora for this particular hat.
