Hey everyone!

Almost 4 years ago I was diagnsed with very severe diabetes. For all that time, I have been taking a nasty-tasting drug called metformin to treat it. A long, difficult road of diet, excercise and lifestyle changes now has me 70 pounds lighter, and now 1 full year with my blood sugar below diabetic levels. As a result, my doctor took me off the drug for a three month trial at full diet control. Not having to taste that foulness anymore sh9uod be reward enough, but I decided to treat myself to a nice vintage lid. Prepared to drop $200 on something nice, I scoured ebay, etsy and ruby lane but didn't find that must-have vintage hat that I would have no buyer's remorse over. So, I decided instead on getting 4 hats, 2 felt and 2 straw, for $50 or so each. I ordered the last one today, as the first arrived on my doorstep.

Nice, soft dark green felt. 2 1/8" overwelt brim, 5" crown as creased Reeded sweat, nice and supple, with sweat barrier. No liner tip cover. Maker is John Batterson, 5th Avenue. Unsure of the age, but it is in really nice shape. Guessing 40's. Felt a little big at first, but seemed to be conforming to my head almost immediately after putting it on.
All in all, quite happy with it. Can't wait to post the rest.:)

Thanks to my lovely wife's generosity, I just received my birthday/Christmas present -- a beautiful new hat from Art Fawcett at Vintage Silhouettes! I already had a Strat clone in Sahara and a wide-ribbon in Blue Smoke, and this one is an unlined Artlite, 6" untapered crown (when not creased) with a wide binding and ribbon both in a dark brown, with Art's signature touch on the bow in gold. It's incredibly light, with a very, very soft, perforated sweatband. An exquisite hat and my nicest so far. (I'm terrible at posting photos, but I'll try to include them soon.) Got my new Campdraft in silver belly from Everything Australian today!

Compared to the CD Deluxe from HatsDirect, the finish is definitely coarser, not as fine. Stiffness and hand are quite similar. The sweatband doesn't feel quite as substantial and subtle but that could be an illusion. Still, I love it! Got another CDD in dark brown coming in...happy as a clam.

Thanks, Bob. It is a nice feeling when hard work pays off.
Lots of new hats today! Love the Artlite, that CD would even make a crab happy, and all those posted by OCMH...wow!

TY Fruno!
As promised, the second of my reward hats. A Young's twenty-five. In beautiful shape, fits nicely, good felt. Only problem us a stale tobacco smell, should air out. Not sure of the age. Brim is a 2" overwelt, crown about 4 3/4" as creased. I'm liking the near-stingy look more and more. Not liking wider brims any less, mind you, just expanding my apprecation for all brims. It had a feather, which vanished about ten seconds after it was pulled from the box.

I have to force myself to not look at hats on ebay anymore now that I bought my rewards...

My third reward showed up today. The postal worker ws delivering as I got back from my walk, she told me I had another hat at my apartment door. Excitedly opened the box to find this.

In good shape, sweatband is a bit dry, but not wavy or crispy. Gonna see if Lexol helps. I have to admit, I was a bit intrigued by the words "manilan braid". I've not heard that term before. The hat weighs in at 105 grams total. 2" brim, 4 1/2" crown. A little big, but as I am more of a 7 5/16", I'd rather add a foam strip or two to a 7 3/8 than stretch a 7 1/4.
And, best of all, I like how it looks on me!

Man, it's gonna be a letdown after the last box arrives and it's not like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one anymore.:(

That's a beauty, Moehawk!! I've got kind of a soft spot for those stingy milans. I just scored a similar Dobbs made of "imported Verona". ??? My guess is it's either a reference to the origin of the straw or just an attempt at clever marketing. I really like the band on yours.

Thanks, dh66. I think I looked at that verona one, and was also puzzled. On this one, I was wondering if the straw was from the Philippines, braided Milan style. I bought this hat mostly for the looks, it just has an attitude I like. The cool band is just icing on the cake.

Well, what little research I've done so far, the logo on the crown looks closest to one I saw dated 1936, the gold sweatband stamp could be from then as well. If anyone knows different, please share!
