Post New Hats Here!

[StoryPNW]

Well, I'm feeling somewhat disappointed by my latest ebay purchase. I had high hopes for this one. I'm not sure how old this Dobbs Bowler is but it was sold as a 7 1/2 and unfortunately is definitely a 7 1/4. Not interested in collecting hats that don't fit me at this point.

Happens a lot. The seller probably measured across the opening and called that the size.

Bummer. At least eBay makes returns simple.

Stretch it or sell it on.

Stretch it or sell it on.

Or return it

Or return it

Or keep it as a possible swop somewhere down the line.

Looks like you're more than ready for the summer with all your fine straws plus the two new ones, Gary. They may not be top notch, but will definitely look cool barbecuing.

Thanks, Steve. I’m very happy with the Sunbody. The Tula only cost about $43 with a discount applied, so I’m not that disappointed. I wasn’t expecting anything exceptional. I was just a little surprised at the difference in quality compared to Etsuko’s hat from the same maker in the same palm straw. Hers was about $10 more.

What a fantastic lady's hat. I've no doubt Etsuko will be able to pull that look off. She has that refined Audrey Hepburn air about her.

Ever the flatterer! Etsuko says you are too kind, but she’s always happy to get the compliments.

I flatter not. You are both a wonderful couple of hat wearers who can pull off a hat style or two.

Three new hats arrived from the Village Hat Shop today, two for me and one for Etsuko.
I’ve been wanting to try a Sunbody for some time now. My first is this teardrop fedora. I’m very pleased with it. I bought a pug at the same time to add to this, or maybe another hat…we’ll see.

My second was another palm straw, this time a Tula. Etsuko has a Tula and is very happy with it, and this was fairly cheap, and looked quite nice in the shop pictures. It arrived with the ribbon a bit out of place, but that was an easy fix.

When I put it on, I found the brim came down too sharply at the front for my liking. Again, being palm leaf, I’m expecting that also to be a reasonably easy fix.

I’ve only tried one of these elastic sweat bands on before. I suspect it was on a Japanese Stetson straw hat. I found it really comfortable. This one, less so. Not terrible - just a bit odd. View attachment 430575
Much more so than Etsuko’s one, this has bits sticking out in several places.
View attachment 430577 View attachment 430578
Finally, the finishing on the ribbon is pretty lacklustre.
View attachment 430579 All that said, I expect this hat to get a lot of wear - probably as my eventual barbecue hat.

Etsuko’s new hat is a Toucan collection. She has a felt hat from the same collection, which she likes a lot, so decided to go with this summer one. She likes it, but with that huge ribbon, thinks it may be a little too refined for her. I think it’ll look great on her when she dresses up a bit. View attachment 430601 View attachment 430602

Fabulous summer additions for the both of you. Etsuko’s is quite lovey. A bit of Marvelous Mrs Masel vibe.

Stetson 4X Beaver Big Country. The open crown measures an honest seven (7) inches but the brim is closer to 4 3/4 to 4 7/8 than 5 inches. I didn’t like the crease as it came so I steamed it into something more to my liking.

[Steve1857]

This one turned out even better than I thought. Originally, I went after the box due to the two labels with a connection to two Danish hatters.

The Top Hat looked interesting.

Didn't think it was this good or of this quality maker.

Yet another piece of Danish hat nerderi

More to come in the Toppers Unite thread.

I'm also thinking of starting a new thread about Danish/Scandinavian hatters. Not that it will have a universal appeal, but just to have these long gone hatters and hat shops on the record.

Yes, do.......

My first custom hat arrived today from Wolfbrae Custom Hatters. Heathered grey felt, 3 inch brim, and bashed at about a 4 inch crown. Working with Robert was a pleasure. Thanks @belfastboy for the great work.

When I get through the summer I shall be making one of these heathers up for myself. I am so glad you like it.

I took a chance on this hat and I’m glad I did. Aside from the foxing on the liner it’s in great condition.

Gorgeous homburg. The way they are supposed to be, Brent. Grey, black ribbon and light brim binding: wonderful.

Part 3. The only one with a label.

Great hat haul, Marcel. You already know my favorites. No surprise I agree with Daniele @Daniele Tanto !

Wow, that has some square footage in felt, Brent. Love the colours. Makes me wonder how many bunnies kicked the bucket for that one!

Great score, Steve. Seems a lot of people are getting rid of these toppers, not knowing how much craftsmanship went into them.

Thanks Stefan.
Luckily for me they are. Thing is, no one really wears them anymore. One off occasions for a novelty perhaps.

I consider myself the custodian of a Top Hat sanctuary. Others consider me nutty

They're not mutually exclusive and "the nutty custodian" has a nice ring to it!

This came in a few days ago.
Gelot in black. Size 58 with the bound brim at 6cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Delivered in its original box and with the gelot packing paper as well. While it is supposed to be a size 58, it doesn't feel like it, because it more or less fits my size 56 (a bit roomy, but still).
The Gelot felts I've handled before were of quality, but the finishing wasn't very good to be honest. This one is a lot better on both. And I do wonder if the felt could be beaver or a mix.
