Wegener "Cornett", 58cm early 1950s. Great form with extreme rear brim flange. The medium weight smoother finish felt is a rich brown and easily dry creases. Also a unusual + effective ribbon width.

This date stamped (02/05/1952) cinema ticket was behind the sweatband.

Great form and colour, Steve. To be able to date it with some certainty is the cherry on top.

John Cavanagh:
The felt is in incredible condition and it’s dense and wonderful and shifts from olive to mid brown depending on the light. The liner has some marks and soiling but not too bad.

The sweat is a wide supple and appears to be a replacement piece (no markings) that was only attached by basting stitches...odd. The sweat is soft and the reed is perfect. The installation was just never completed. This is my oldest Cavanagh and my first John Cavanagh. Even with the sweat issue I’m glad I got it.

I’m not sure what to make of the stamp on the back of the sweatband.

Many here would wish they had this problem, but sometimes shopping for hats can be too successful. After only three shops yesterday I could have had twenty hats at least, but I was determined not to get too carried away, called it a day and came home with seven hats. First one.
Echter Borsalino lobbia in Dattero colour. Size 6, which is 7 3/8 American. Model Gulaela, export Qualität, with the brim at 6cm and the crown 11cm at the pinch. Some discoloration on the brim binding can be seen in the pics, but other than that it's in great condition. Because it's not my size it will go to the classifieds (PM me if interested).

Second one is this lovely coloured Mayser Spezial homburg in a size 58, or 7 1/4 American. The label doesn't give the colour name, but it's a nice mid-to-dark grey that seems to change hue under different lighting. Brim sits at 5,5cm and the crown at 11,5cm at the center dent. Liner is still stitched in, which puts it in the fifties. Another one that isn't for me due to size. Off to the classifieds it goes.

Interlude (wasn't part of the seven).
I was very pleased to get this one. I'm a fan of Barbisio hats and it's the brand I own most hats of, after Borsalino. Barbisio Rat Gondin (that's nutria to you and me) in a size 56, with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown 11cm at the pinch. The label has faded unfortunately, but I think the colour is Umbria.
This is the earliest Barbisio hat I have seen. It was sold by Pietro Radiconcini&Figlio of Rome. There are several hats sold by Radiconcini posted on the lounge, but usually that is Alfredo Radiconcini, being the "Figlio" of Pietro.

Here's the real number three. Brummel's "Nice" fedora in brown, size 57. Bound brim at 6,5cm and crown 10,5cm at the pinch. Brummel's was a brand made in Belgium. I have another one of their hats (a spiral stitch fedora). I have serious doubts however that this hat was made by them. Everything about it screams Borsalino to me: shape, dimensions, felt, sweatband, liner and size label all point to Alessandria.

Number four in wednesday's haul. This came as a nice little surprise: an unknown brand (to me at least) with a high quality hat.
Maviso "Superfine" homburg in blue. Size 57 (but fits like a perfect 56). Brim sits at 5,5cm and the crown 11cm at the center dent. When I'm shopping for hats in these vintage stores I have to wade through masses of black homburgs (the good, the bad and the ugly), which means they were either a very popular model and colour or they are just survivor hats. So hats in other colours jump out at once. This one did and it's the usual very dark blue. Very high quality felt with a superb hand to it and very good finishing. Brim binding still needs a bit of cleaning, but very happy with this one.

Number five. I was determined not to buy any more black velour hats, but they have a certain "doggy in the window" appeal to them. Once you start petting one, you're lost. Happened to me with this one (and the next one too).
Echter Haarvelour in black and that's about it. No label or brand in it. It had a liner at one point, but when I found it the crown patch was gone completely. Raw edge brim sits at 6cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. It has a very tall crown and the deep center dent (it wanted it that way) causes somewhat of a reverse taper. Unreeded sweatband, which is in decent shape and a frayed bow. This could also be called a longhair, but who am I to argue?

Number six. Another one of those puppies. This one has the moniker Feinste Velour Mode and that's all. I consider this one to be more a true velour if you will, with a shorter nap to the felt. The previous one has a much longer nap and feels more like a longhair. Very dense feel and soft hand. It keeps its shape very well. Raw edge brim at 5,5cm and crown 11cm at the center dent. Still needs a bit of work on the front brim, which shows some slope. I left behind a blue velour hat because of a very pronounced sloping of the brim, which always gives me the impression of a sagging hat.
This one is not as early as the other one, but still a hat with quite a bit of age.

Number seven. Not my size, but I couldn't resist. Don't see this brand too often and I really like the colours and the shape. Resolut in grey. Size 58 with the bound brim at 7cm and crown 11cm at the center dent. I wouldn't really call this a fedora because it is meant to be worn brim up. It will work as a fedora, but it's not meant that way. Found two cinema tickets behind the sweatband from Luxemburg (not dated alas).

The Barbisio has a great bow with a triangle reminiscent of the gray Czech hat we chatted about some weeks back. What is your estimate of age? I wish more was readable on the label - it seems to use a post WWII typography me but I am far from experienced in Barbisio marks. Here is the label on the Bulgarian rat-gondin:

I think this is one hell of a hat no matter the brand Stefan.
Everytime i see one like this i think of a black bear in prime coat glistening in the sunshine...so black almost blue.

More pics of my new Borsalino Safari. The listing said it was a size 7 that fit more like a 7 1/8, but after 4 hours on a custom band block it fits just fine. Maybe because the stitching in the back of the sweatband is torn. The listing also said there is no "apparent" moth damage, but there are some very shallow nibbles easily taken care of with some sand paper.
The stitching on the brim will have to be removed, as it is badly torn. I am thinking of asking Ignacio to curl the brim a little.
It is soiled and stained, but that will easily come off with Ignacio's Ethyl Perchlorate.
It often mystifies me why online sellers, even some of the best, like Jula and Roberto of City Vintage on Etsy, don't bother to give their hats a good white gas bath. It would increase the value.
The felt on the Brim is stiff and thick, but malleable, and the crown is soft.

Thanks, Alan. Daniele thinks it to be pre-war and I tend to agree with him. I'd say possibly mid to late thirties. I've been looking for information on Pietro and Alfredo Radiconcini to see if that can shed some more light on its age.
