He works on straws all the time in his shop. I saw him sneer at a straw hat that had been machine-creased. He said creasing should be done by hand. I haven't seen him do it, or asked him how it's done. I will ask him next time I see him

My $12.50 lot of "straw" hats arrived. Mixed emotions, but what do you want for $12.50? Came with a couple of vintage hat boxes as well.

My second Caxton. This one I bought for 35 dollars, almost 6 per cent of what my first one cost, because this one was sooo dirty. Mud came out every time I put it in the gas bath, and it took four baths before it was clean.

My new Stetson One Hundred, after being conformed by Ignacio. It was a 7 1/2, and the seller told me he had it altered.
Unfortunatelly, a lot of stiffener was put on the brim, and a previous ribbon stitch mark showed right in front of the crown, and it really bothered me.
Ignacio turned the felt around so that now the stitch mark is on the back, and hardly noticeable. I didn't want to put in a wider ribbon to hide the mark, because I like the proportions and the ribbon the hat came with.
Ignacio could do nothing about the stiffener, so after he finished cussing about it he did the best he could to curl and curve the brim a little.

That's a puzzler for sure. The generic liner is late in Stetson's timeline, when hats were very stiff. Wonder what parts are original?

The crown felt is very soft, and the brim is stiff as a board. Ignacio says the felt quality is excellent. He says the felt in the crown was turned inside-out at some point, and that the alteration was done in Mexico.
I didn't quite understand how he knew that, but he seemed very sure.

Cervo Gold Bantam "Piuma", 59cm possibly later 1950s. This NOS find is from Daniele and my latest visit to the M. Hutter find in Merano, Italy. The detail work is really fantastic and the felt is very light weight with side vents.
Fantastic hat, Steve. Underlines what a great hatmaker Cervo was back in the day. The colour, pork pie style, button side vents, thin rope ribbon with the bow flowing into the side, the design work on the liner and sweatband, not to mention the exquisite 5 ring stitching on the top and bottom of the crown all make it a joy to behold.
