Good evening. I lucked up and acquired this old Stetson. I was hoping some of you vintage hat aficionados could fill in the historical blanks about this particular model. Age? Place in the Stetson line hierarchy....?

The brim length is 2 3/4” and the open crown hight 5 1/2”

I have to say the felt is very nice and supple. It is still a work in progress as I attempt to nurse it back into form.

Good get, D. That's a great hat. I believe we have a Sovereign Twenty thread around here that can show you some additional examples of the style. The unusual thing I see about it is the reference to "beaver" twenty, as they normally say just "twenty." Many of these seem to have come with a mode edge, as well, but yours is an overwelt? Any additional pics of markings, liner tip?

Anyway, great find. You wear it well.

Greetings all. Long time lurker, latest member. It seems like a great community and I thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie and contributions by all. I finally made the dive and acquired a few hats recently, so now I have something to humbly contribute.

My first purchase is nothing special, but I figured I'd start with the "first name in hats," an Adam. Should make for a decent everyday beater hat. The ribbon is what drew me to this particular pork pie. Based on threads I've read on here this is probably late 50s or early 60s.



My apologies for poor picture quality. It will be a trial and error basis as I try different locations and lighting conditions. (For example, the leather sweatband is actually brown.)

I promise to up my game with my future postings. I also have a vintage Knox Twenty and a Stetson bowler, so stay tuned.

Great lid, D! Do you have a shot of the liner? Is there a size tag hanging in the back from the sweat?

You being in Philly there might be some special hats that never went made it out to other retail outlets. A fine hat, clearly.

Welcome to the lounge. Very nice first entry; I like the look of that felt and the ribbon is a nice change too. Look forward to your future entries.

It’s an odd hat, Ryan. My concern is that it’s easy to flatten the brim, but hard to reflange it. Before I go for the irreversible flattening I want to explore my options. I tried it with a cattleman, Gus, and center dent first. The felt is reasonably compliant with steam. The center dent has the unfortunate tendency to give the crown taper whereas a diamond or teardrop tend to remove taper. I do want as little taper as possible.

I’m in the measure twice, cut once stage: I don’t want to make any substantial modifications until I’ve thought them through. A brim curl would take away some of the brim width. I can also trim the brim back incrementally until I like it. It’s just such an odd hat, and yet I can feel there is something cool hiding there if I could find a way to bring it out. I still wonder what market it was originally made for.

Curl it, don’t cut it. Then dent it. Bet you like it then. All else fails...trade it otherwise it will end up just another black cut brim fedora with alot of work. Ymmv

Honestly, i never think about dents. I hardly ever steam anything cause i’m lazy.
I just stick em on my head and squash em down. They usually like to go their way. What i don’t like are creases that don’t stay. If it doesn’t stay then it’s just a pose for a pic. Center dents are elegant, if they stay! Lots don’t.
So, idk.

Boy....i can’t help myself. I keep coming back to look at this hat image!
I think this is one of the nicest hat images i have ever seen. It just stuns me everytime i look at it. I can’t even imagine touching it! Boy!!
There was a image of a white Cross Country awhile back that was close. Wish i’d saved it too.

Curling the brim would definitely give it a true western look while also helping manage the overall brim width. And given the proportions, minimal taper is ideal, so I agree that a crease that minimizes that is the way to go. Trimming is an option, but a final one the way I see it. It appears to be a very nice hat, so I understand the struggle in finding the right look and not ruining any of it's qualities or value while also keeping it in a style that you could get a lot of use out of.

There's two more cents from me. I'm almost up to Bowen's nickel.

You said it, Red! I'm just catching up. Heck with all those hats there is no room to get on the wagon because its full. Now I really wonder what's in Stefan's attic.

That Stetson is certainly not a benchsitter. Nice catch, Reggie. I'll take a picture of my attic if I can find my wide-angle lens somewhere.

Three hats coming in today (some just passing through). First one is nothing too special, but I can't resist hats with those cellophane covers in the liner. Borsalino nero, size 58 with the bound brim at 5,5cm an the crown 10,5 cm at the pinch.
Interestingly I found the "export quality" sticker under the sweats of two hats today.

The second one is not a spectacular model, but interesting nonetheless.
Borsalino Rodio, size 56 with the bound brim at 6cm and crown 11cm at the pinch. What makes this one different is the way the Borsalino brand name is represented on the liner and sweatband. Never seen this one before. I think this one is from the seventies.

Third one coming in today fell squarely into the category "hats that make you happy".
Borsalino Lunasca model in the colour Nembo (meaning "nimbus"), which is a fantastic blueish grey colour. Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown 10cm at the pinch. Very lightweight, unlined, hat weighing in at only 85 grams. Sold by Sools of Paris.
Both the model and the colour name I've never seen before.
