I Worked at Mohegan sun for a few years ,then opened a barbershop in Norwich on 2000. Yes I went to del Monico in April , had to go back to Bridgeport , to see my attorney and his office is right in top of the store, and yes I bought a stetson Panama hat lol.....

Nice. When the Sun first opened up I used to go monthly to make my donation... not recently. Which Stetson Panama did u get? I have a Panama Brewster and a Origional '47 Panama with a 2 and 3/4 in. brim. The Stetson Latte Milan that I wore today is a Shantung "straw."

My Lovely Bride came home from an estate sale yesterday...



She was hoping to pick up an old Stetson box for me for my recently-acquired old Stetsons. When she got to the estate sale, the closet where the box was pictured was empty :eusa_doh:. But she poked around a bit, and found it in another corner of the room. This is what she brought me:




No re-order label under the sweat, but a union tag, and the mystery number on the sweat.



Best of all, it's my size!!



It's a great, rich charcoal grey, with a 1 5/8" black band. Matching bound brim, which is 2 1/4". Crown's a hair over 5" open; creased, about 4 1/2" in the front, a hair under 5" on the sides. The quality feels similar to my older Stetsons, which I'm pretty sure date to the early 50s. Pretty dense, not too thick, and pretty easy to work with. I steamed it up and brushed it out before the photos, but it was in pretty good shape to begin with. My guess is this one's right about 1960. What do you guys think?

Oh, yeah, and of course the price my wife got was great. I think she's a keeper. :biggrin:

I've pretty much sworn off the eBay, but on the rare occasion I run across something in the wild, and it fits...well, I feel a little obligated to snag it. Especially if it's under $20.

Union made by someone for the Paragon hat shop in Cincinnati. I'm guessing late 50s/early 60s. It has the peculiar faux Cavanaugh edge, looks like one from on top, but is an underwelt with the stitching hidden all below. Very lightweight felt that holds a dry crease nicely. A great example of how much nicer the vintage felts, even the off-brand ones, can be.

Hey everyone!

Just finished my third original creation. I ended up having to give up on that battred old Stetson Revenger I found a few weeks ago. The damage was more than I could fix without unneccesary frustration. It did, however, let me see what my recently finished straight sided block could do. I was happy with the shape so I went ahead and used my last felt body on it.
I originally intended to make an Open Road style out of this loden rabbit fur blank when I ordered it, but when I dyed that Lagomarsino green I knew what I really needed was a better Indiana Jones style lid in green. So, I had to put my plans for an OR clone on hold and get to work on my Irish Indy.
I did the brim at 2 5/8" and the open crown at 5 3/4". The liner is satin and the ribbon is 1 1/2" cotton/rayon, originally the color was a medium reddish brown called turftan that I dyed in kelly green idye set with soda ash for good measure. The thread I used is old vintage mercerized cotton that I found on little wooden spools at the thrift store, rubbed on a cake of beeswax before use. Way better than poly. I was much happier with the placement of the sweatband on this one than my first two, and my overall stitching ws almost good enough to show. Almost. Maybe the next one.
The color is closest to the first pic. The lighting was odd today so other pics appear lighter colored.

There is some nice hats recently!

Today I'm a happy camper as I got my second vintage Playboy, this one in a light grey;

it needed a little steam, brushing and a little ironing out the wavy brim on the flange



This one is a later model, somewhere in the 50's I'd guess

Leaf logos instead of stars like my 40's model and it's got a ventilated liner like you see in some straw hats. maybe a replacement? It is exactly like my other one in every other way. Same dimensions, similar finish and stiffness (that is not much, both Playboys are more on the floppy side than my other vintage Stetsons)

Nice Tommy! Yes, my Playboys are quite floppy as well compared to other Stetsons from that era. I actually find them more difficult to shape the crown than any other hat I own. But I still really like them. I love that ventilated liner in yours!

Two lovely Playboys. I don't see why that liner would be a replacement... just one of countless iterations in the Stetson hat finishing room. Both have the decorative stitch at the edge of the brim?

Alan, the liner does have the same un-yellowed ivory color and rich purplish blue colors in the logo so I'm sure it's just as you say, another variation. Yes, both have the same decorative stitch.

Beautiful Playboys you've got there Tommy. Maybe ventilated liners were used on light colored hats to make them more wearable in warmer weather?
