Alan, I think you're right - now that I look at it carefully the circle does go evenly around the crown.

That seam would be hidden by the sharp edge at the top of a top hat. There is probably also a diagonal seam running vertically up one side of the crown.

Alan - lovely stetson. That sweat embossing is sharp.

Garrett - looks good despite that brim damage. There are a couple of UK companies that specialise in Silk Top Hat repairs who would probably be able to work on a bowler. The liner logo looks very much like Christys.

Richard, I think you are right about it being a British make - Here is the close up of the crest

and here is a link that may back-up the Welsh possibilities

It could have been made by Christys for a Welsh shop (Aberystwyth doesn't have any hat shops these days (I used to live there)). It could have been made by Christys for any store in the UK though.

The logo is a variant of the seal of the Order of the Garter http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/sociopol_garter03.htm so there's undoubtedly a UK link. Christys current logo is pretty much identical apart from Christys London replacing the Order of the Garter motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense http://www.christys-hats.com/v/ourhistory.htm. It's possible I maybe barking up the wrong tree and other hatters have used the Order of the Garter image too (a lot of late 19th and early 20th Century UK hat makers had Royal Warrants).

Borsalino Alessandria Grand Prix

I think this is my new favorite Borsalino. I really like the color combination. I was looking at the tag behind the sweat that normally has the model, color and size but can't make much out of it since most of it has been torn off. This is the first one I've seen with an aqua colored border. It is also a 7 3/8 which would normally be too big for me since I most often wear as 7 1/8 to 7 1/4. It was sold at Maurice L. Rothchild & Co. It has a 2 1/2" brim and a 5 3/4" open crown with 2" grosgrain ribbon and wind trolley. The sweatband is reeded.
