Today is a lazy sea day. The seas were really calm last night, and still calm through the afternoon today. Debbie came out on the balcony this morning and annouced it as good as Indian Ocean cruising. It was like a pond. Both Debbie and Margie have their fingers crossed that this calmness will continue. We all sat through an interview with Captain Romeo in the Constellation Theater this morning from 9 to 10. At 10, Terry Breen gave another lecture on Equador, where we will be tomorrow, docking at Manta. Terry ended her talk with a discussion of Panama hats which are made in Montecristi, close to Manta. Among the three of us, it was decided that Margie should buy one to replace her current hat. But she will not be looking in the superfine range (a Panama hat rating) where the price might be more than $500. Her range is in the $20 lessfine, trash hat (not a Panama hat rating).

The district of Catacaos is located on Peru's north coast in the Province of Piura at 25 meters above sea level, in the Grau region, and only 12 km from the regional capital and 1h 15' by commercial flight from Lima: it is famed for its crafts, gastronomy and its chicha de jora (locally made spirits); the town, with over 54,000 inhabitants, has a predominantly farming and crafts economy, since it is surrounded by one of the most fertile valleys in the Grau region, whose cotton textiles are prized in the country and abroad for their fine texture and long fibers.

The crafts made in this town are both locally and internationally recognized as being of prime quality, to the point that it was officially recognized as the best made in the country by Law 25132, in 1989. Its craftsmen have an uncanny knack for making fine jewelry in gold and silver filigree (fine threads of the metal), with which they decorate necklaces, wedding bands and any other metal article one requests; another noted craft is woven toquilla straw, famous for its quality and refinement;

The Valdivia figurine tradition represents the earliest known example of this form of artistic expression in the Americas. Initially produced from stone, these tiny statuettes have been interpreted as fertility figures, shamanic spirits, and mythical ancestors, although their precise meaning remains uncertain. Typically female, early stone figurines varied in form from simple engraved tablets to carefully carved miniature sculptures, like the one pictured here. This tiny figurine stands but 3.5 inches tall, and was probably made from a form of calcium carbonate. Most likely female, the figure's face is formed by a series of incised lines surrounded by a halo of straight, long hair. Her arms are indicated just barely and the faint impression of breasts is apparent. Her legs are formed by two vertical lines that flare slightly at the waist and feet. Although ceramic figurines eventually came to replace stone figures in Valdivian culture, many of the traits were based on their stone predecessors.

HISTORY OF ECUADOR
Little is known about the earliest arrival of humanity in the New World the date has been set as early as 80,000 years ago, and as recently as 20,000. There is general agreement, however, that the beginning in 3000 BC, society began to move toward permanent settlements and communities, a change usually indicated by the presence of pottery. And the earliest substantial evidence of pottery in the New World is found along the coast of Ecuador .
The Valdivian site at Alta Loma is rich in pottery decorated by carved motifs and colored clays. The ancient town of some 2,000 people at Real Alto was adding ceremonial temples to its architecture by 1500 BC, and sculpted female figurines and other forms suggest a degree of artisitic as well as ritualistic purpose. The pre-historic Valdivian culture of today's Manab?? Province thus argues that Ecuador is not a poor sister to New World civilizations -- the Incas to the south and the Mayas to the north -- but perhaps their ancestor.
Another extremely significant find in Ecuador was named La Tolita, after an island in the mouth of the Santiago River in Esmeraldas Province. This culture flourished along the Pacific coast around 300 BC, and its sophistication in metallurgy and goldwork is exceptional. Great quantities of gold figurines and ornaments were found here -- much now lost to looters and prospectors -- and platinum objects were created as well. The technology to work platinum, whose melting temperature is much higher than gold's, was not rediscovered until the 1850's.
The Manta culture which followed, again in Manab?? Province to the south, built great cities of 20,000 people, traded with M?©xico and Per??, and manufactured textiles as well as gold, silver, pottery and stone work. They may also have settled, at least seasonally, on the Gal?°pagos: domesticated strains of cotton have been found in the islands, and shards of pottery as well.

The Valdivia culture is one of the oldest settled cultures recorded in the Americas. It emerged from the earlier Las Vegas culture and thrived on the Santa Elena peninsula near the modern-day town of Valdivia, Ecuador between 3500 BC and 1800 BC.
The Valdivia culture was discovered in 1956 by the Ecuadorian archeologist Emilio Estrada. Based on comparison of archeological remains and pottery styles (specifically, the similarity between the Valdivian pottery and the ancient J?Ö?mon culture on the island of Ky?Ö¬´sh?Ö¬´, Japan) Estrada, along with the American archaeologist Betty Meggers suggested that a relationship between the people of Ecuador and the people of Japan existed in ancient times. Part of the theory was that the Japanese had conducted trans-Pacific trade. This theory was controversial, for no evidence of contact between the two populations had previously been suggested, and it remains unsupported within the archaeological community.
The Valdivia lived in a community that built its houses in a circle or oval around a central plaza and were sedentary people that lived off farming and fishing, though occasionally they went hunting for deer. From the remains that have been found, it has been determined that Valdivians cultivated maize, kidney beans, squash, cassava, hot peppers and cotton plants, the latter of which was used to make clothing.
Valdivian pottery initially was rough and practical, but it became splendid, delicate and large over time. They generally used red and gray colors; and the polished dark red pottery is characteristic of the Valdivia period. In their ceramics and stone works, the Valdivia culture shows a progression from the most simple to much more complicated works.
The trademark Valdivia piece is the "Venus" of Valdivia: feminine ceramic figures which were likely used in a variety of unknown rituals of fertility. The "Venus" of Valdivia likely represented actual people, as each figurine is individual and unique, as can be seen by the hairstyles. They were made joining two rolls of clay, leaving the lower portion separated as legs and making the body and head from the top portion. The arms were usually very short, in most cases were bent towards the chest, holding the breasts or under the chin.
