I have my Grandfather's bead looms (and some jars of beads -- from back when he taught arts/crafts as part of a WPA project in Chicago) and have thought about trying my hand at it. Then I remembered that I can barely see well enough to pull a tick when necessary so dealing with tiny beads is probably not in the cards.

Then I remembered that I can barely see well enough to pull a tick when necessary so dealing with tiny beads is probably not in the cards.

Then I remembered that I can barely see well enough to pull a tick when necessary so dealing with tiny beads is probably not in the cards.

Learning to sew at my age has been rather aggravating in any poor lighting. I ordered extra thimbles, ones that wrap around your fingers instead of going on the tip, protecting a couple of fingers on each hand. It's a good treatment for rampant bursts of profanity.
It sounds to me like beading is in your blood, an inheritance from the patriarch to the scion of the family.

Is the ribbon a twill?
I haven't developed any great liking for the rope trimming of so many of the fuzzy ones. I feel like I should buy an itchy jacket with patches on the sleeves, or sing about flowers before fleeing the Nazis.
In fact (here I go, ready to spill my guts again ... Confession warning!) when I was first sharing my thoughts on how I intended to break into hatting as a profession, in large part taking my cue from Epetinger's book, where either he in his introduction or whover wrote the forward talks about refurbishing, renovating and even remodelling older hats, I mentioned the idea of modernizing some of the vintage felts. You cautioned me, in fact, about changing hats that collectors would rather see left in their original state of purity, not deflowered and fed into the maws of pop culture. It was sage advice, and I instinctively recognized it already. When I replaced the sweat band in my Stetson retiree from the Forest Sevice I knew that it didnt matter that the roan replacement was very nice. It didn't have embossed labels that would identify the hat to anyone as a Stetson 4X beaver, and the hats dignity took a hit. I knew that. And your call for prudence did inspire me to more caution and deliberation about the way I treat the piece of history in my hands.
Well, most of the time, anyway. Going back more than a year, when I first learnrd there was more to a first grade hat than a leather sweatband and satin lining, now jaded toward my Scala in it's wool ignomy, I first ventured into the arena of eBay vintage hats. I reeled in a Setson Sovereign. With a Luxuro finish no less. I was surprised how light it was, as I had been when I lucked upon an open road years ago at a thrift store.
I now know that it wasn't the treasure I thought at the time. Very nice felt and finish, like I rememberd hush puppy shoes, but this lady had maybe never seen the inside of a hatbox. She'd been a working hat, out in the world earning her keep. And it showed, like the difference between the derierre of a 22 year old law student and that of the 39 year old corporate lawyer aunt that inspired her career choice. Undeniable, but not discussed in polite society. You know, the brim very soft in front just below the flange because with that much time in the daily grinder its inevitable you'll be left squatting on a shelf or table brim down at times, maybe even on a chair or bench where some exhausted fat man fails to see you. Life is hard. These things happen.
I'm in the springtime of my romance with hats though. My juices are flowing. My blood is up. I dont openly admit it to myself, but I can see that the Sovereign has crested the hill. It isnt' like 22 year old law students never cross your path.
You find yourself in front of a computer screen late at night, oogling the fim curves of a specimen that was so pampered she never went out, or one that had a good run around the park followed by some spa time.
And so, it begins; this desire for a harem. Slowly first, you bring home a Western gal that doesn't have hair out of place. Her wholesome, athletic lines draw you, but the hint of foot stomping follows her, and you just don't taker out as much as you thought you would. You like to gaze at her on the wall, even over your shoulder in a mirror as you're prowling around eBay once again with sweaty palms. One taste is never enough.

I've used an awful lot of time, and haven't even gotten to the point I'm leading to, with stories of maidenhood compromised and innocence lost, but I better call an intermission. I need to go earn a bit of money. I do need to shower first. Maybe a cold one.

I heard long ago that they didn't shave, and we have the evidence before our eyes, in the new amore as well as the one recently shown the door. I have hirsuit little maiden as well, and her story will be told.

I bought a hat from a guy a while back and told him that I’d be interested in any vintage hats he could find in 7 1/2 or bigger. Well, he found one and offered it to me. It’s not a hat I’m interested in (stingy) so I gave him a lowball offer expecting him to refuse. Of course he accepted. Anyone interested? It should be here early next week.
