On balance I preferred the hand warmers (and the zip pocket was actually growing on me), but I do like this in black. The lining also looks superb. Very nice jacket. Dave , I would be curious to see how this would look in a leather/ wool mix.

Overall I think it is a great jacket, and the remake is an improvement. But along with Edward, I think the hand-warmers were a better idea. I love patch pockets - I've got an A2 - but the hand warmers made the jacket a bit cleaner looking and more unique. We've got enough leather flight jackets with patch pockets to lay to the moon and back.

All said - hand warmers or not, it still is a good design and I'm sure it would sell if you chose to produce it.

Exactly why I'm looking. I have grown more fond of Civi designs, sans knits lately. But I also really really like that A-1 in blue posted elsewhere. Knits can make a sweet looking kit for contrast. They're also nice for colder times/climates. But I also hate the pilling and moth-potential...

Scott, I am with you in veering in the direction of civilian/utility designs without the knits. My latest acquisitions (G&B Expedition, Aero Highwayman, and Aero Teamster) reflect my preference of lack of knits. I even prefer my Highwayman without storm cuffs (inside knits). Hence, DD's most recent civilian A-1 jacket, similar to Himel Brothers' Heron and Aero's Aeromarine, is very much on my radar. Furthermore, DD is located only 240 miles from me.

I haven't liked this look much before but I'm warming to this one. I personally would go for zips. May not be period correct but I find all those buttons distracting.

Actually, from what I've read, this style did latterly have zips, so you can feel comfortable in your authenticity.

Yup. We've discussed this in depth elsewhere on here.

Zips began to be used on jackets at the very end of the 20's, and became much more common in the 30's.

The first zips were relatively short in length - so the first thing would have been zip closure on a top (cigarette) pocket on an otherwise buttoned jacket. Later, as longer zips became available, then the full length front closure could be redesigned to accommodate a zipper.

Cuffs remained buttoned, studded or elasticated, except, of course for some bike jackets that began to use lateral zip closure.

So choose your period, and go for the jacket you prefer
