Mad Max is a franchise I'd love to see them do as a streaming series, which would allow for so much more world building. The massive jump in the state of the world between the first and second films always suffered for lack of a clearer explanation imo.

I just found the disconnect between the aesthetics rather extreme. To my eye the first film has worn much better over time, whereas the second one looks dated - the third very badly so. To be fair, of course, that's in large part because it was so instrumental in defining the post-apocalyptic look of that period of cinema.

I re-watched the Mad Max trilogy recently: the first two are better than the third, but the third is still a lot of fun. The idea of slow then sudden apocalyptic change is probably likely - I loved 'Black Summer' for the same reason.

I agree on the disconnect. I actually watched the third movie first, early in my teens.
When I then got to see one and two, and just didn’t get how the world deteriorated so fast with Rockatansky being more or less the same guy (albeit with worse clothing and a ridiculous sculpted hairdo).

To this day, I would watch number two anytime. Just a fun movie without any “quality-pretence“ whatsoever. I love the first movie, obviously, but I do find it so sad and depressing that I am not so keen to re-watch more than very occasionally.

I think the problem I had with the third one is Tina Turner. Great performer and her acting is credible in itself, but she's such an iconic and recognisable performer that it takes me out of it every time, kills any sense of realism in it. The final act with the tribe of lost kids is great, though - and felt to me a credible exploration of how such an oral culture could develop a mythologised history.

My favourites remain the first film and the more recent one with Tom Hardy. What does help explain variation between them of course is the oft-spoken of intent that the films were all meant to bed campfire stories, legends of Mad Max told in this future dystopia, based on various recollections and retellings, so a level of variation makes sense. I'd like to see another Max picture with Hardy. Still keeping an eye on my streamers for Furiosa; it is available for home rental, but I'm afraid I don't care for the idea of paying a streamer a subscription to watch stuff and then paying *more* for it in early release. Don't mind that stage existing, though it does somehow seem now that, post-covid, we're seeing a significantly longer period of it being on the 'pay more' section - up to two years in some cases I've noticed.

Throwing in my 2 pence, prefer a colour to stay on for a good while before the patina appears. I think the patina goes a lot better when the leather and structure shows signs of heavy use. Then the story of the jacket comes alive.
