One off Schott 118 sold, replaced with a 618 maybe a big mistake?

So, given the great deals offered by both Vanson and Schott, and my wanting to support two of my favorite small businesses, I’ve bought two new Schott jackets and a Vanson Chopper jacket in the last few weeks. However, in an effort to keep my life partner sane I agreed to sell one of my other Schott jackets...a quirky one off 118. I loved the jacket after purchasing it off eBay a few months ago, bnut it had two issues: it was an odd one off 118...supposedly signed by Oren Schott of the Schott family, and it had the stars on the epaulets (riveted on from behind) like the 613. The build tag had been removed. At first I doubted it’s authenticity but it wore and felt like a Schott. It also had a bit of a weird closet smell. Not a bad smell, just missing the leather smell. So the 618, in brown, is to be the replacement. I was hankering to break in a steerhide Schott, and thought the brown would be an awesome addition as I already have another new 118. Now the oddball 118 is gone, and the new 618 is here but I think I might have made a mistake. The 618 is nice, but seems a bit thinner. What do you think?

Not a mistake but, well, yeah - the 118 is made from the highest grade cowhide Schott offers for their regular line, the so called Naked Cowhide. While the 618 is made from Steerhide. Both are cowhides of course but the Naked Cowhide is marginally thicker and doesn't have that heavy top coating. It's also pricier if I'm not mistaken. I think there's a $100 upcharge for the 118?

The 118 was very nice... Are those Riri zippers? Never seen one without chain pulls. Must've been some special edition.

But yeah, it's not a mistake, you sold one cool jacket and got the other and they're essentially the same.

Probably not what you want to hear, but i would have kept the 118.
It was a unique model that was "different" even if it's only a signature, it's a small difference in a sea of Perfectos that are all the same.

The 618 on the other hand is just any old 618, and the fact that this specific one has that stitching mistake (pic 5) on the sleeve end would annoy me, that's IMO a factory second.
Did you buy that jacket new from Schott? Because if you did i would personally send it back and get a replacement.

Yes I did, I purchased it two weeks ago new from Schott as part of the 25% off promotion offered because of our current Pandemic situation. Funny I honestly thought the same myself that since it was on sale, they sent me a second. There is also a small scratch in the leather near the collar. (it is deep and shows the bare leather through). I am sad if I was sent a second as a sale item. Kind of defeats the purpose. I will call them tomorrow and see what option I have for return. Monitor yes it did have the Riri zippers. That was one of the reasons I believed it was a knock off or a factory second especially since the build tag was missing (you could see where it had been removed). Maybe it was a one off sold at the Schott factory sale. I would have kept the 118 if I could have gotten rid of the closet smell it had. I tried everything including placing it overnight in an ozone filled room. Again the jacket didn’t stink, it just had an odd non leather smell I could not get past. I will say the one thing I do appreciate about the steerhide is that it is pretty creaky and noisy , which I love. This is much like my 618 in HH. It’s also thinner like this jacket as well.

My other draw for pulling the trigger on the 618 was the brown. Maybe since I have another 118 (pictures attached) I will consider an exchange for an 519 in brown

If you look at photo 10 of the 618 you can see the scratch to the far right near the collar

Maybe that was its normal smell? Y'know, in all these years, I never quite understood what is it that people refer to as the "leather smell". Most all leather jackets I've had smelled completely different. Many people often expect leather to have a certain smell but I don't really think there is one. Dunno, my nose has never been any good, though so maybe I'm wrong but... I just never to this day associated one specific smell to belong to leather.

In any case, what @Carlos840 says, if the sleeve stitching bothers you, absolutely call them and have the jacket exchanged. Why not get something a bit more cooler? The 508 is on a major discount right now!

The scratch bothers me less, that's something you could do yourself by accident, unless it goes all the way through it's not really a problem. Annoying on a new jacket, but i have received new jackets with similar things from other makers.
The sleeve that was stitched, then unstitched 3" and then restitched leaving a bunch of empty stitch holes, that is IMO not acceptable.
IMO they can't get away with something like that, not at the price they are selling these jackets. I would complain and ask for it to be exchanged.

Even if it doesn't bother you specifically, it is a defect you are going to have to disclose if you ever sell the jacket, it is a defect that will lower resale value, and will make it harder to sell.
I would not buy that jacket second hand because of that. I might care about stitching more than the average person, but i am ready to bet i am not the only one who would pass on this jacket because of that.

No I completely agree and will be exchanging it for sure.sometimes I’m too forgiving especially when something is on sale, but acceptedmlowemquality defeats the benefit of getting it on sale. You are absolutely correct.

Hey there!
Welcome to the FL!
Yes, the 618 in brown is thinner and less dense that the leather on the 118 I have and the one I sold. I do believe it is, in part, due to the fact that the leather is treated and finished where the 118 is unfinished and more “plump” However, I do feel like it is still a lighter weight leather for sure. I do like the jacket a lot now that I have it, it creaks a lot (which I Lille) and has a nice look but if had had to choose only one I’d go with the 118 due to the thicker leather. You will have to post pictures once you get it. I’ve never seen a brown 618 on eBay so sounds like you found a rare showing

Hi
Thanks for the Great Welcome!
I wish the 118 came in Brown. I would of liked that better. I wanted a Brown M/C Jacket. I think it is more of a Fashon Statement. I don’t Ride so only wearing it out. Don’t Know why SCHOTT can’t make the 618 in the same Weight Leather. I looked at SCHOTT’S Description on the 618 and says it’s a Heavy Leather at 3 to 3.5 Thick. Same as the 118 description.
I sure will post Pictures. I did get a great deal 400 New. Did not fit owner but he lost the tags so SCHOTT IN CANADA would not exchange it for him.
Stay Safe and Healthy
Peter

Hello Spencer

I just received my Brown 618. First Seller told me it was New just Missing the Tags. Turned out to be Made in 2014 as Per the Pocket Bar Code. Still A Great Deal. Don’t know why People have to Lie?
He Said I Bought it and Never Wore it. Don’t see and Steve Creases from wearing it. Leather Feels Thick Enough for Me.
It did have Color Wear on end of Cuffs and around bottom of Jacket. I used Picards Brown Conditioner. Has a Very Little Color Dye in it. They have it in Black Too. I used both with Great Results. I post a Branded Garment Leather Jacket in Black that I used the Black Picards.
Some SCHOTT Owners like the Color wear. I don’t. I did not take any Before Pictures.

Hey there!
That looks great and the leather looks thick enough. I don’t see any signs of creasing Oe wear. It does suck that it was positioned as new but like you said it was a good deal for sure. The ends of the cuffs look perfect that conditioner did the trick. I think you did good does it still have some leather scent?
