One of my Favorite Suits - Single, Peaked and Crazy Stripes

I pulled this out to take some pics of the belt I made for the back out of extra trouser material. While it was out, I threw it on the ol' resale mannequin for some posterity pics.
It was made for a Mr. Lee Gurley by the Rogers Tailoring Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.

Love it. Now, even though I am the guy who started the whole belt a back thread, I could see someone saying that it was not so good to take such an amazing suit and make it unoriginal. I can see the point, but am ambivalent about it. As long as your alteration is something that is period correct, then what is the harm. Are you going to narrow the lapels next?

I like it, and say, great work. I also think that if ever a suit was right with a belted back, this is it. It goes from being a suit I kind of like in an amazing fabric, to a suit I love in an amazing fabric.

Wow! Looks like a whole suit made out of hickory stripe/cashmere stripe/formal day trouser fabric. Like what you'd wear with a morning coat.

... which brings to mind this post:

I wonder why the striped trousers went out of fashion ...Virtually no businessman wears it. However, many a smart-looking career woman has an entire suit with a black and medium gray striped pattern.

If the vest were still with it and the overall condition was a lot better, I may not have done the belt for originality's sake. The condition is good, there's no bug damage but, somebody loved this suit and wore it a lot. I had to make various repairs here and there, mostly to the lining, especially the trouser lining which shows a lot of wear. You can tell it was dry cleaned a lot because the union label's all faded and wearing thin. Anyhow, it's still very wearable and like I said in the other thread, you'd be hard pressed to find someone that could tell you the belt was not original. I even used vintage thread sewing it on!

So, why do you only bust it out every couple of years. if it were mine, i think I would wear it to the gym every day.

Because San Diego sucks. People wear jeans when it's a suit occasion. And the suit occasions just don't happen too often anymore.
The last time there was an occasion, there was dancing involved so I opted for a belted with action-back sportscoat that I have. It's got an NRA label in the pocket rather than union label which puts it probably 1934-35. But that's another thread.

I know how that goes. When I moved to Seattle, I put my suits away for the most part. People just don't receive them the same way, and as a single guy, i have to take some care towards my reception.

On the other hand, for my birthday, i wore my cream belted back suit down to the area that is mostly young people dance club meat market spots. I was a huge hit with the ladies, and some of the white guys and most of the black guys thanks to my spectator shoes.

When I lived in SF, I began to wear suits out less and less because when I did go out, I was dancing more and more and opted for vintage slacks and striped suits. Once you dance in those, you are unlikely to go back to dancing in a suit.

My favorite suit I've ever seen belongs to a friend of mine, who got it made when he was in Thailand. Similar to that one, with stripes a little narrower then those in charcoal, light gray and a lighter navy. Single breasted and slimly cut in accordance with his stature, which would probably make it less popular here, but the fabric is amazing.

It looks like a charcoal suit with a light gray pinstripe from a distance, but one you get up close it's a whole different suit.

Nice suit, beautiful colors... however, dare I say, shortening a 30s suit makes it appear as a post war bold suit in many regards. The length of the coat is too long; some of the balance of it is tossed off to my eye.

Killer fabric though, just don't ever see that color or pattern.
