Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

Now I'm wondering how many of those homicides were illicit drug traffickers shooting it out amongst themselves. In a city that size, a jump of 10 homicides over the year before doubles the per capita rate.

I gotta wonder what the suicide rate is in the greater Rockford/Loves Park area. Every time I drive north out of Chicago I mutter to myself, "If I have to pay one more toll I just might shoot myself." And then, when you get so close to Wisconsin you can see and smell it, they get you at one last tollbooth.

Chicago is a rust belt city and many areas in Illinois are the same. They have had a deindustrialization in areas like Flint, Detroit and other car related areas. Things have changed in that area since the 1950s. Now there are HUGE ghettos and abandoned buildings in places that once thrived. Perhaps the suicide rate is higher---it would make sense. A property that was once worth ten times what it is today is quite depressing. There are initiatives to revive the area but the full effect of such things have yet to be seen. We had a similar case out here with the closing of the GM plant and the Del Monte Canneries etc. Oakland is still a mess today.

Ah, so that's where you get your racist tendencies; a common trait of Southsiders. Though they don't hide their ugliness behind statistics as you do. Look, we get it; you don't like Blacks and Hispanics so you moved to a lily white suburb where you now sit and decry the dangerous city. I truly hope that the drivel you've been spitting out doesn't discourage anybody from visiting one of the world's great cities.

Ok, that is enough of that.

In the trade, we call such a crime, "Shooting into occupied clothing". We puzzle as to whether we should serve the shooter with a Bill of Indictment or a public service award.

I can appreciate how people on your end of things would see it that way. At the very least, it might aid in preserving your sanity.

The pity, though, is that the people who engage in such behavior are generally young, and too often they lose their lives, or take someone else's, before they have the chance to lose their youthfulness. Lord knows my attitudes and behaviors are considerably changed from what they were when I was a young fellow.

I don't pretend for a moment that I'm not surrounded by prostitution and illicit drug trafficking, but where I'm living now it's conducted discreetly and for that reason I don't pay it much mind. From my perspective, any person who stands on a street corner and sells a $20 rock or a minute or two of his or her "affection" to anyone with a picture of Andrew Jackson is asking to get arrested. But I just don't see that around here.

Yes, I know that such crimes may well affect me, even if they are considerably less visible here than they are (or were) in places I've lived before. Habitual "hard" drug users are perhaps likelier than people in general to commit property crimes. And hookers do their part to spread diseases we all end up paying for, one way or another. But unless we establish a police state on a scale that just about all of us would find unbearable, we'll always have a certain level of that sort of thing. Or so human history to date would suggest.

That's true of any big city. In Milwaukee, there's lots of beautiful neighborhoods and historic places to go. In some places, however, you can be somewhere nice and go a block or two in any direction and be in a rough neighborhood. When you're in the cities, it's just good to make sure you have somewhat of a grasp of where you are, keep your wits about you, stay out of bad neighborhoods and enjoy the positive aspects a city has to offer.

Chicago IS an amazing city, and I was stating that there are areas of the city where you can not go.

Tom, its interesting that you say this...I've noticed that Milwaukee is a very ethnically segregated city. Not necessarily talking about the schools...just the various neighborhoods. A person can be in a very Hispanic neighborhood and just across the street is a very Polish neighborhood, and three blocks further on, the neighborhood turns entirely African American or Anglo or Serbian. And the demarcations seem to be very stark…in other words…cultures can change totally when one crosses only a small one-way street.

I think most Northern cities are still like this -- Boston's ethnic enclaves are still pretty strong, for example. African Americans lived for the most part in Roxbury in 1940 -- and the major concentration of African-American Bostonians still live there today. Southie was and still is a bastion of the Irish. The West End was and is a major Italian enclave. And all of these neighborhoods still actively resent colonization by "new" ethnicities or gentrification by yuppies.

So, to paraphrase all 42 pages of this thread, it was a bad idea to juggle children at the top edge of a building, even in the Golden Era?
MisterCairo, if you ever want to retire and move south, I think there is a job for you here at our local newspaper. The staff there always manages to reduce everything that happened in a week-long criminal trial to a single cryptic headline followed by a puzzling five-sentence paragraph. :D

Wanna bet? The PRC and the Russian Federation are capitalist states. They couldn't give a polished turd for liberty and freedom.

Anybody who thinks that capitalism is synonymous with liberty is an idiot.

And this thread will be closed in 3...2...

It's possible to discuss such things in an adult manner without resorting to name-calling. But unfortunately, in this day and age, name calling is more a part of such discussions than ever. If you don't agree with My Particular Belief, you're a fascist/socialist/wingnut/moonbat/libtard/idiot.

We've come so far. And such outbursts only prove it.
