Hello ladies! I have finally given up hope trying to research the technique used to achieve these marvelous 40's bangs. I was hoping one of you gals might have a few pointers you could throw in. I cant even seem to tell if they are rolled backward or forward! I dont see this hairstyle out and about very often but it sure does look great! My favorite is the version worn by Rachel in the movie Bladerunner. Greatly appreciate any tips!!

Heres a few examples, rather hard to find pictures since i dont know exactly what you would call it.

Most likely. I have never gotten the hang of rats, really. Of course I try to make do using foam ones rather than my own hair, which is dumb.

The foam ones suck. There are better ones that a) match your hair better (if you can find someplace that carries different colors) b) grip your hair better and c) are easier to pin into. Used to use this type all the time as a kid for buns for ballet. They are made of nylon mesh, not foam, and are available from the Vermont Country Store.

That tutorial certainly achieves the look, but I agree with Miss Bella, it'd look terrible from the top. I think rats are the way to go. Rats keep the hair so nice, heaven forbid you go out in the wind with that hair elastic do- it'd be gone in an instant. That rat that KittyT suggested is wonderful, I've just started using one similar and I love it.

It's actually not a problem at all-- if you use a very thin ponytail holder the color of the persons hair it is invisible. If you pin it properly, it looks like a front roll and stays in place through a 40 mile long, 70 mph car ride with all 4 windows down, a wild night of swing dancing, a return trip, and sleeping.

You just have to practice it-- it's very secure, though.

What about these doohickeys? Saw them after looking at links in the 'interesting curl tools' thread. They're made of covered wire apparently but I'm sure you could fashion one yourself from pipe cleaners the same colour as your hair, or maybe buy some sort of insulated wire from a hardware store. You can see how it's done in the picture:

alternatively you could just buy one on ebay or something.
