O'Farrell el numero dos - this one is more my current speed.

Black beaver felt, made June 16, 2003, for George A. Heitczman, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania attorney. The original shop tag is still behind the sweatband, marked "23 1/4 Conformed / IFC Fedora." Conformed, I assume, means they definitely used the conformateur to get the shape for this one. If anyone can enlighten me as to what "IFC" means, please do.

The crown is 4 1/2" as creased, with a 2 3/4" brim and 1" ribbon. I particularly like the bow treatment and the proportions generally.

The crease is VERY locked in. You can tell this one was made by a Cowboy Hat Guy. Apparently, once an O'Farrell gets a crease, it stays creased. :)

My first O'Farrell. I must admit, it's growing on me. What do you guys think - can I make it work?

A question for you Western hat experts: What's the deal with the flat brims? Is this a traditional Western style, or is the expectation that the owner will shape it? I'm used to seeing some sort of curl or sweep, and instead we have a pancake. What am I missing here? Also what is this crown shape called; please and thank you.

I love this hatband. I assumed it was custom work for the original owner, but I spotted a very similar one immediately to the north. Very cool, though.

This one was custom made for George A. Heitczman, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania attorney. The sweatband label is dated November 10, 1998, putting it in the post-ownership-transition period at O'Farrell's Durango operation.

How many cows do I have to buy before I'm allowed to wear this hat? Can they be the furry ones?

From here it looks like a center dent with a pinch. Pretty standard crease. The blocking profile used looks like it has some taper to it.

I'm not really a Western guy so I can't speak for whether having a center dent with a pinch calls for a flat brim (I'm guessing not), but I'd guess that you can do whatever you want with it. Could get someone to put a pencil/kettle curl on it, leave it flat, or really whatever you want.
