Non-insulated Leather Jackets?

I'm wanting a lightweight, spring/fall leather jacket that doesn't have insulation. Is there such a thing and what is it called?

Hey,

It's, um, called a leather jacket. Insulation is seldom used in quality repro leather jackets we talk about here. Leather won't keep you warm, by itself it's just a windbreaker without something providing insulation so any jacket with a simple cotton lining is what you're looking for and there's plenty of that around.

You'll need to be a bit more specific; what style are you after?

By insulation do you mean lining? Or thermal insulation, such as polyester, thinsulate, etc?
There are unlined leather jackets (check Thedi and Schott). If you want lined (but non-insulated) jackets then you have many options. With many brands (such as Aero) you can choose the lining you want, you may choose a lightweight fabric.

Yes, there should be plenty of leather jackets with thin linings. Our beloved Buco J-100 here is only lined with cotton linings, the A-2s are mostly lined with thin cotton linings as well. Actually, if you look at a lot of women's mall leather jackets, they are all very lightweight and thin, aren't they? I guess you just need to avoid something like FQHH or heavy weight steerhides?

Like I said, you have dozens of brands to chose from that make quality OTR jackets lined only with a cotton or a polyester lining so now it all comes down to what kind of jacket style do you want. If you want a custom made jacket, most if not all makers will let you choose the lining.

Welcome: I would also recommend a lighter weight leather such as capeskin or goatskin. Horsehide and heavy steerhide might not be warmer, but they are heavier and thicker. Keep us updated!

I often see some really lightweight horsehide jackets on styleforum, and the fashion industry cowhide is extremely thin as well. It all depends how they cut it. Italian horsehide can be particularly thin.

I find a Capeskin A-1 is very useful for warm weather, extremely light weight

Done you blaspheme in here! Don't you blaspheme!

Lambskin is usually shunned around here. It's very light, a fashion leather that tears and wears very easily. Capeskin is close, it is adult sheep leather used for period accurate WW1 A1 flight jackets. Wears better than lamb.

I personally would choose goat which is very hard wearing or a light (2oz) calf or cow hide.

Don't know where you live but down here any hide 3oz or heavier is too heavy for most days in this humid and hot land.

The A-1 Capeskin is the lightest flight jacket I've come across, I wear it when it's too warm for an A-2 it's like a light leather sweater IMHO

Or keep watching Ebay. I just scored a great cotton lined Schott in goat leather for $95. A perfect 9 month of the year jacket up here in the Pacific Northwest. And scored a new US Authentic G8 with a satin lining for $250, not sure of the leather, not goat for sure, likely a cow hide. It is a bit heavier/thicker leather than the Schott but still a fine jacket for this climate.

I would definitely try also Schott (https://www.schottnyc.com). They don't get a lot of attention here mainly because you cannot customize but they are excellent jackets.
Recently I received a custom jacket for my girlfriend from Aero. The leather is soft black italian horsehide, still not in Aero's website. Really light and soft but miles away from mall jackets. If you go for a custom jacket then I'd advise to ask for leather swatches, most of the companies will send you a couple of small samples for free. You can feel them and test them.
