Just received this pretty wide single panel flat cap. It's 100% wool and a bit of a monster. I've been looking for a 1920's style cap for ages - had to be large, like a plate, single panel like these guys are wearing....

You can get lots of 8-panel caps of varying sizes but this is the first modern cap I've found of such proportions. Not sure if I like it or not. It reminds me of 'Ecky Thump' - If you ar UK based and of a certain age then you'll know what I mean.
Certainly keep the rain off your head and the sun from your eyes, but is it a step too far. lol

too much? Nah!

Its the dogs danglies of caps. If it was comparison with the photo you wanted you achived your aim.
To avoid eckythumpness avoid whippits like the plague...Oh and smile.

I don't usually like the cap but theres loads of fans on here. You'll have to tell everyone where, how much , how long to come etc.

Let's have it then...

Where from?
New?
Or vintage?
How much?
How long did it take to reach you?
Custom?
Off the rack?
Sized accurately?
Or Sm, Med. L?
Leather sweatband or cloth?
Press stud on the front??

:)

AND - That's a cracker jack of a hat. Looks absolutely the way it should, and like the sort of thing many of the gentlemen here have been looking for.

EXXXCELLENT!!!

I want one in black! details and source, please, please, pretty please.....

If you are a bit over-awed by the magnificent span, remember that you don't have to wear it straight....if i may quote myself from a recent ebay listing.....

"Respectable men would wear these straight, like a giant pancake on top of their heads, while crooks, gangsters, corner boys, tough guys, revolutionaries, bohemians, playboys, and men about town would pull them into a wonderful variety of shapes, perhaps flopped over one side or pulled right back with the brim unsnapped."

AS IT HAPPENS....I have a small one listed in Classifieds, and in connection with that I resurrected your original thread only yesterday! Check out the leather one, it gives an idea of the sort of shape people used to bash these into...

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=15227&page=2&highlight=caps

In the 1970s and 80s some older farmworkers were still wearing these, and I remember they often favoured unsnapping the brim, pulling the whole thing back and to one side, then tilting the whole thing to one side...looked great! In the immortal words of Cole Porter - "Experiment"!

The big one!

I bought the cap from these people - http://www.thelookingglass.co.uk/ - based in Bridgenorth, Shropshire, UK. It cost £31.00 plus £3.75 post and packing. It's new and not vintage - I would prefer a vintage one but haven't been able to find one yet. Plenty of small saucer sized caps which I can't be doing with.

(My current favourite cap is from the Glenalmond Tweed company -http://www.glenalmond.com/shop/acatalog/Hats.html
They are great quality and currently reduced to £25 plus Post and packing. Nice and big and baggy 8 panel caps in Harris Tweed.)

Anyway, back to this cap - Doesn't look like they have their website fully up and running yet.
They also sell via E-bay -
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Looking-Glass-Bridgnorth
They haven't got any further stock of this particular cap - I believe they will have new stock in the autumn. Their telephone number is 01746 765 883 - speak to either Lizzy or Emma.
The cap comes in two basic colours of wool - green or brown. Mine is in green. Basically an olive green with fine brown and rust coloured sq pattern. Not as good quality wool as good old Harris Tweed but ok all the same. There appears to be a thin foam lining under the fabric - maybe this helps hold its shape? The overall diameter of the cap is 12". I am size 58 or 59 usually 73/8 or 75/8 - this cap is sized as '59' and fits fine.
The brim has a press stud. The cap is lined in black satin with satin band and has a label stamped on the satin lining rather than sewn in - its states 'THE SUSQUEHANA HAT CO.'
Can't find anything out about them on the net - imagine they are a small outfit with no web presence.

Hope that answers your questions. Anymore, just keep firing.

Regards

'THE SUSQUEHANA HAT CO.'

I've heard of them! A friend has a gorgeous tweed cap by them he bought in Leeds last year. It's a cross between the so-called "breton" cap and an 8 panel...which sounds bl**dy horrible but believe me it looks gorgeous.

I also failed to find much about them on the web, but there were a couple of leads if I remember rightly...this is going back 6 months or so. I must re-google (and visit Leeds too!)

Anyway, thanks for the info, I shall now go check that Bridgenorth website.....

Hi,

If you find out anything please let me know.
I spoke with Lizzy or was it Emma, just last week - mine was the last one and happened to be in my size. Maybe if you call them you may get them to get some stock that much quicker.

Best of luck!

I'm sure there'll be some around somewhere - sounds as if the mysterious Susquehana Co. are supplying various small specialist retailers throughout the country but not selling direct to the public. Anyway, if I find any in Leeds I'll post.

It's a major step when I start buying repro gear...just shows how hard these are to find in human sizes!

Wow, that is a large cap...wider than some of my fedoras. I like it though. I hadn't seen one this large. As hats and caps slowly make their way back into the mainstream, we continue to stay ahead of the trends.

Looks like you are right there. The Sutlers Stores states: "This range features our best value for money hats that we have commissioned especially for our customers, accordingly many of them are only available exclusively from us."

These are their Susquihana hats: http://www.sutlers.co.uk/acatalog/THE_SUTLERS_STORE_RANGE.html
