I think it looks great on you. And I believe the bound edge gives it a little extra something.

Hows the stiffness of the straw?
As I plan on bringing the back of my brim down a little.

I recieved info on my order yesterday....4-6 weeks and I shall have it!

It is on the stiff side and takes some effort to snap it down. This doesn't impact the appearance though (at least IMO). Also as Bart pointed out mine doesn't have the normal Straw Whippet ribbon / bow. Looks to be the same as the Brewster. An outlet oddity?

Hats look absolutely great, HandlebarBart and Mayserwenger!

Similar in shape and dimensions to my Dobbs Arcadia, but that one has wider ribbon, no brim binding and a sewn pseudo-milan structure.

So, how is this hat in warm weather? Does it breathe enough?

I wore the Arcadia today in record-high Atlanta weather, and once again my biggest complaints are (1) breathability - openings in the weave should be larger, and (2) the sweatband - as noted by St Ignatz. Yeah, it's real leather, but stiff and the least absorbant I've encountered.

Probably the sweatband is the bigger issue...not sure...am trying to figure out how to make it more comfortable because I really like the looks. Switched to Tilly hemp later in the day for a walk and it was much better.

Hatco, Does Anyone Have them for Sale?

Hey HATCO, look in the books and give us the names of some retailers who have actually bought these hats and have them in stock. They might get a few call in orders.

I stopped in my local hat store yesterday (Bernie Utz in Seattle) to see if they had any of the new Whippets in. They did not :( However, they said they would try to get a 7 1/2 on their next order, so I may see one in the next few weeks.

Has anyone seen one of these actually in the wild yet? (as opposed to the gracious evals we've seen in this thread that is).

Dang

Just called the Stetson outlet store. She told me the largest straw Whippet she had was a 71/8. She says they are selling like crazy.

Bummer. :(

Whippet good!

I got a call from Bernie Utz yesterday that the 2010 Whippet I ordered was in. Here is a quick phone shot, I hope to post better pictures this weekend.

It's a great looking hat. The silver-belly color and brown trim is distinctive. However, it has a very plastic feel to it. I don't know if it's the material or some kind of treatment, but the hat is very stiff. However, it looks great and for $75.00 it will make a fine casual hat for summer.

If anyone in the Seattle area is interested, the hat shop ordered a 7 3/8 as well as the 7 1/2 I bought. They should still have the smaller size in stock. Unfortunately, Bernie Utz does not sell on-line so you will need to go to the shop in person.

If anyone is looking fo a similar style of the Whippet in a better hat, look at the Stetson Brewster. Its made of panama straw with a bound edge. The problem is that there is a shoertage of goodstraw bodies and these hats are almost sold out . Once they are gone, thats it for this summer!
