Liz does it again...and with lagniappe! (I can promise you Bernie's name didn't appear on Jones' record. I don't think it did on Roger Wolfe Kahn's, either...)

I'll hold off on another lyric till someone gets the dog & cat one.

Ah, I seem to have Stumped The Experts. What do I win?

The correct answer is "I'm Sure Of Everything But You," by Pete Wendling, Charles O'Flynn, and George Meyer. A big hit in the winter of 1932, with maybe the best record made by Annette Hanshaw. The complete lyric:

I just picked out a cottage and it’s by a waterfall
There’s lilacs in the springtime, and the roses stay till fall,
There’s “Welcome” on the doorstep, “Home Sweet Home” upon the wall,
I’m sure of everything but you.

I bought a bowl of goldfish and they swim and everything,
Canaries in their cages, say you oughta hear them sing,
The telephone’s installed and I’m just waiting for your ring,
I’m sure of everything but you.

The dog and cat — they don’t know where they’re at
They’re yearing for your company
The cat bow-wows, the little dog meows,
Without you pet, they’re all upset
The same as me,

I thought about a cradle, dear, but that would never do,
‘Cause when you think of cradles, you know that’s a thought for two
Now everything looks rosy, and still everything looks blue,
I’m sure of everything but you.

Oh dang. I even own the original Ted Lewis Blue Columbia 78 and I still didn't get that one. I only remembered the don't-know-where-they're-at line!

(Y'know, I had a phonographic memory once. Then the needle started to skip. )

You won the last one, so you get to pose the next question lol Hey with 5000+ 78s, and more CD/Lp reissues, I thought I knew a thing or two about 30s-40s songs but I've been stumped on almost every one so far...

And a shiny silver dollar to the fellow in the snappy lid. That's absolutely correct -- a very fine Harry Warren-Mort Dixon-Billy Rose tune. Bing Crosby's recording of it is worth looking up -- it sounds like Bing was suffering from a bad flareup of laryngitis when he went before the mike!

The floor is open to the next challenge...

An easy one:

From being merely
A necessary luxury
And someone sympathetic to have about,
Why, now you're nearly
A luxurious necessity
I couldn't imagine ever living without...

From one of my favorite composers ,circa 1935.

"I suppose I could somehow struggle through
but I'd hate to picture myself without you"

" A Picture Of Me Without You" that's the name of the song :p
And a very nice song it is too!
There I answered myself.

Try this one:

They'll be in the gravy when you're in the grave

...not-so-well-known song from a well-known movie musical.
"Oh, Those Pesky Pork-Chops", by King Mutt and his Tennessee Thumpers, on Gennett Electrobeam royal blue series?

So what's your next tune HadleyH?

-- edit --
Since we're all throwing our hats in the ring, here's mine, an audio sample w/ title edited out: And since we've probably scared off anyone from the thread except the experts in early- to mid-30s stuff... :p

MP3 Sample, 30 seconds (partial credit if you can guess the artist(s))

Nope, but you get an honorary No-Prize for the most amusing and creative (and so far the only) response.

Another hint: the song is a march, sung by a hall full of conventioneers.

They'll be in the gravy when you're in the grave

Someone at least identify the movie title (hint: it had a year in it) and the singer-star.
