So do I.
I can't laugh - I still like Robert Palmer's stuff.
Come to think of it I like most 80's stuff. But Robert Palmer was a class act. Always sharply dressed.

There was a short-lived jump-blues/swing/latin revival in the UK in the early 80's with some 40's style suits being worn by several bands.

The Chevalier Brothers were probably the best of the revival bands -

and lead singer/tenor man Ray Gelato is currently a very succesful musician

Do you remember when he was with The New Dynamite Band, Salv? (They were pretty rubbish before he joined in 1981, when they got their new image and sound.) I used to go and see that band all the time at the Adam & Eve in Hackney and tried my hardest to get Ray to notice me!!! I failed dismally!

I took this 1982 (at a Caister weekender!)

I've been a bit of a fan-girl ever since those days, and probably listen to more Gelato than any other artiste. I saw him at the end of September at Ronnie Scott's and TBH, he just gets better and better. He's playing there this week too - really wanted to go but was told 'no' :( !!

my wife got a Victorias secret catalog the other day. In it was a model wearing sturrup leggings, heals and one of those long poofy sweater things that went past the butt. NOOO

Tell me it aintso. I hated that outfit in the 80's as a preeteen and how it trickled into my early highschool years. I hate it now.

If I see someone wearing it I will tell them the 80's called and they want their outfit back.

the onlything good from that erra that is not political that I can think of.

humm lets see. Oh I know Tamiya Radio controlled cars.

No, I never saw, or knew about, the New Dynamite Band. According to Ray's site they were a Bill Haley-esque R&R band and I wasn't really part of the R&R scene in the early 80s, so they completely passed me by. I didn't see him until the Chevalier Brothers formed in 82, and that was far more my kind of thing - I could really relate to Louis Jordan covers!

Great photo - Ray looks so young.

He's still a solid R&B honker, no matter how he tries to dress it up as jazz or swing, and that's what I love about his music. The other tenor player in the band when I saw him last year was clearly a trained jazz musician and technically more proficient than Ray, but Ray's playing had that much more life to it.

I didn't like the fashion of the 80's and I don't like it now. My mom sewed and I had little 50's dresses. Not much has changed there.

Music is something else. I had a much adored older brother that I got up to par on music to be cool (I was 5 in 1980). To that end, I've been an R.E.M. fan since I heard them on college radio when I was 6 or 7 (much to my brother's disgust.) I was too little to be a punk, but I would have been. My sister liked pop and was a huge Julian Lennon fan. I got both worlds I guess there.

Late 80's: uh folks, that would mean big bow heads would be back in style. I'm gonna go cry now.

I can sing both Video killed and Japanese. Not well, but I can.

One thing you all forgot to mention being cool from the 80's: Atari. Strawberry Shortcake. Transformers. Chicken McNuggets. Star Trek motion picture. All off the top of my head!

Yes, the 80's are back. I've seen leggings, mullets on models, you name it. However, they are picking and choosing their looks.

However, there was a 40's revival in the 80's too. I have some patterns from the "Dynasty Collection" that if I made them up in the right fabrics, would pass for 40's stuff at FL events.

Don't dare me, I'll do it! I even wore bell bottoms to Club 1970 in 1988!!!! lol

As for naff, my mom graduated H.S. in 1960 and when she sees me in 30's and 40's vintage she shudders and says that I look like her mom! To her, wedges and a swing dress are the ultimate naff, the mod 60's look is where it's at.
