Myers-Briggs 16 personality types does seem to pretty much give a good summary of a person's attitudes/tendencies. Some administrators have shared the opinion that it is possible to change some of one's indicators, with considerable effort. Having taken it three times I have remained solidly ISTJ. It is interesting to find quite a few of the same type on this site.

so let me get this straight as i'm guessing this is more of an american thing to take...

i looked at the websites and it said you have to pay to take a test to tell you what kind of person you are. huh? i'd understand if it was free. but honestly? people pay good money for this? why?

i'm really not trying to be patronising, i'm not that kind of person. i just geniunly don't understand...[huh]

As mentioned, the one I took was free - it was pretty in-depth, Basically they give a list of typical jobs each type would be best suited for. For example, mine was essentially introverted, task-oriented, stressing neat & orderly over ideas and creativity, etc etc. I'm an archivist - basically arrange things for later retrieval by researchers - so that's pretty spot on.

However, I do have my creative side and that pokes out from time to time, at which point this type of work can be stifling. Again, the test is just a basic barometer to point you in a some direction. I imagine it would be good for people wishing to switch careers but unsure what they want to do, or maybe teens about to graduate and head to college or the workforce.

INFP, IIRC. :p

I took it in 1989 while attending the TAC NCO Academy at Bergstrom AFB, TX. They had everyone in the class (close to 100 TSgts) take it.

They assembled us in a hanger to give us our results. The psychologist that administered the test broke the class results down. The two points I recall were that a majority of the personnel (about 70%) turned out to be what she called "God and Country" types, ESTJ or close to it. There were only two in what she called the "Self-actualizers" catagory. I don't know who the other one was. :D

I'd already known that I approached things differently than most of my peers; the test helped me understand why.

Regards,
Tom

And there are companies that put a lot of weight in personality tests also. I'd be wary of a company like that.;)

My employer does some type of personality test. Pretty much all accountants fit a certain type, and just about everyone they've fired fits a different type. (By the way, I think my employer is great.:)

This makes me think of a movie where Audrey Hepburn played a woman who was trying to be a nun, and the doctor she was working with said (in the movie), "I've worked with a lot of nuns--and you're not in the mold."

It's more about preferences that the type of person you are. Take me for example, my preference is introvert but because of my line of work I act like a n extrovert most of the time.

Your "type" can change as well. I generally test as a ISTJ or ISTP, yet this morning I was a INFJ. Mood effects it as well...
