My New Find- Vintage Cal Leathers Horsehide Jacket

It seems sometimes I get so wrapped up and enchanted by all these newer jackets, I tend to overlook the time tested classics (upon which many of these newer models are based.) So while I’m waiting for my new Aero iteration from Thurston, here’s a look at something I picked up recently- a vintage Cal Leathers motorcycle jacket in horsehide. Over fifty years old.
I found it at a consignment store, hidden on the back rack, like some forgotten orphan, (and at a price that was ludicrously reasonable for the quality and pedigree.) I couldn’t walk away without it.
The arms are longer than the usual vintage jackets I find, and the horsehide is heavy, thick, and in wonderful shape. Every time I put it on, it just feels hefty, substantial and solid. I particularly like the simple no-action/no gusseted back, and the absence of belt loops and extraneous pockets. It just has two zippered hand warmers and an interior pocket. My only complaint is that it may be just a little short on me- the front just grazes the top of my belt- but I suppose that is the nature of the style.
I didn’t realize this, but Cal Leathers of Ventura is still in business, and all their jackets are custom made. When I called down there to Cal Leathers, they were very informative about the history and details of this particular jacket. The label (red letters on white label) and Conmar zips placed the year it was made at 1957. A CHP jacket (California Highway Patrol.)
According to the folks at Cal Leathers, it originally it sold for $85 in 1957- a lot of money back when the average hourly wage was 85 cents. If I were to order it today, it would set me back around 2k.
Although I’m typically more of a Café Racer or Half-belt kind of guy, I can’t deny that sometimes it nice to have that bad-ass moto jacket waiting in the wings, for those rare occasions. And this one just seemed to drop into my lap.

Cool jacket and what a great find. I have been on the lookout for one like that for a long time, but no luck to date. It looks to be in very good condition. I think the fit looks fine. Johnson Leathers made me one very similar and it is short like that, but perfect for the motorcycle, and not too short to wear casually.

It's really in amazing condition. I came across a vintage Johnson in a similar style- in the beautiful Johnson naked leather, but unfortunately it was way too big.
I didn't think I could get away with wearing this style of motorcycle jacket anymore- those punk rock days were a while ago. But screw it...it makes me feel good when I put it on and that's all that counts.

What a great find and so well preserved. I think the look in the attachment is just right for the type of jacket. Agree that having a simple back really works especially if it's for casual wear. FWIW, one reason I don't wear my Aero Ridley more for casual is that I think it really needs to have some character to it first, and yours has that in spades.

Nice find and you, like me, live in SF. It's like Never Never Land here and no gives a f**k what you wear., no matter how old you are. If you like wearing it that's all that matters.

That's a ripper of a jacket Technovox, looks like a great fit and suits you. Just goes to show you what a real quality jacket is, it's got another 50 + years in it yet.

Looks great. I figured it for CHP as soon as I saw the photo. Nice take on the Perfecto style, just that tiny bit dialled back to more simplicity. I always associte these with Iggy Pop for some reason. Wear it hard.

Great jacket and what a cool find. I love looking at old jackets from the heyday.

Perfectos just scream attitude no matter what a person does or doesn't wear with it. I'm too straight and narrow for the style - I have one in the wings that stays in the wings. But I do appreciate a nice old jacket when I see one!

Great find! Nonce about you being to old to wear it. have friends in their 70s and one in his 80s that still wear theirs! Enjoy it, life's to short not to. By the way, cool shirt, The Racers Edge!

Thanks! I came across the STP T-shirt at a thrift store and it just seemed to fit with the jacket.
Such a timeless logo...

That's a great jacket! I have one that looks exactly like that. How did you know it's horsehide? The labels are missing in mine, but I don't know if the labels state horsehide or not anyway. Does yours have the fur lining inside the cuffs? Mine is the heaviest leather jacket I own.
