My Cagleco G1

Hey all,

Ive been a long time lurker here for awhile now, so I'd thought I'd start off posting by showing my early 50's size 44 Cagleco G1 I picked up. Unfortunately, it needs quite a few repairs, as you can see from the pics;

The zipper pull has broken off of the slider(Sorry for the poor quality), I'm not sure whether to send it in to get a new pull or just get a new slider altogether, but otherwise, the zipper is in pretty good condition.

The shoulder, as you can see, has a tear through the leather, though it looks clean enough to be fixed.

The cuffs appear to have been cut off at some point, but this seems to be the easiest parts to repair, and I have a set of cuffs from US Wings I can have sewn on.

Other than those problems, the jacket is in remarkable condition.

The bi-weave waist appears to be original, and in very good condition, only one little moth hole and a little bit of white paint on one side but still nice and tight.

The windflap does not have the 'USN' stamped into it(Like most G1s), however, it does have the words 'V1 DIV'. What this means, I have no idea. Possibly the identification of the former owner's squadron?

The stenciled 'USN' behind the collar is still legible and crisp, and the original buttons and throat flap are still there.

The original tag is still legible, aswell as the liner is still intact and the mouton is all there, aside from one little spot on the back.

All in all, a pretty cool jacket, though if anyone could refer me to someone I could send this in to get the necessary repairs, I'd really appreciate it.:)

Ive heard that Aero does excellent repairs, but Im sure you want someone in the USA. I dont know of anyone, but Im betting someone else on here would.

Yes, I would prefer someone in the US. I'd send it to Gibson and Barnes, though I'm not sure if they do repairs or not.

I believe G&B will not do any repairs or alterations but only fix defects/warranty for their own products. I've heard US Authentic does good repair work, but I do not have any personal experience with the company.

Ive heard about them too. I tried emailing about it, but got a message back saying their email is full.

true, g and b will not do any work except on jackets they originally made/sold. lawsuit happy customer who had a jacket repaired there some years back prompted the policy

Found a place locally that'll do the necessary repairs and the owner has some experience with repairing this type of jacket, so I dropped off the jacket there and hopefully it'll be done by next week.:)

Good luck with the repairs. I like the golden faded mouton. I take it this jacket saw a lot of action. Most Cagleco's I have seen have very dark mouton.

If the zip tape and teeth are in good shape you just need to replace the slider. This would be easy to do by removing the top stopper clamp, removing the broken slider, then putting on the new one. I can't see the type clearly from your photo but it's likely to be a Conmar. I have a few of these if you need one:

Thanks. The guy seemed to know what I needed, as he stated he had worked on jackets like mine before. Don't really know much about the jacket, though I did do a little research and found that the 'V1 DIV' punched into the windflap means that it was probably issued to a ground maintenance crewman.

As for the zipper, you'd be right, it's a vintage Conmar, like in the photo and I'm definitely interested in your offer. :)

Yes, the Cagleco jackets with the dark colored mouton that never seemed to fade out were from an altogether different contarct. According to a good source there were 6 different G-1 contracts during the life of that manufacturer. The earlier model ending in 911A dates 1954. Your model jacket is obviously from a much later contract.

Have you had any luck having this jacket refurbished?

Fixing the jacket

I understand that US Authentic does repairs, too. I have a battered old G-1 that I keep meaning to send to repair the cuffs. I wil get around to it, I guess -- unless anyone knows of a place in the Atlanta area that does quality repairs.
Anyone?

Sorry for butting in on something I'm not the expert on--But I know that US Wings(Not sure if that is what you had meant) sells replacement cuffs and waistbands for A-2s and G-1s. They also do repairs on jackets. I have no personal experience with them.


In my humble opinion, I'd procure the cuff + band set ( 20USD ) and then take the lot to a local leather shop or dry cleaner to have them attached.
