Movie hats

Possibly the four most desperate characters in all of Film Noir, as well as a great assortment of hats!

Well, there's another DVD/Blu-Ray added to the list. I'm partial to the hat Robert Ryan is wearing in that photo, but I could find an exact duplicate and I'd still look like Ed Begley Sr.. *sigh*

Yeah, I really like seeing the evolution of style in this one. Even the music is moving in new directions.
Another good one if you like seeing hats from this era is "The Lineup" from 1958. Stingy Brims and Porkpies included! And it even has an appearance from Raymond Bailey - AKA Mr. Drysdale from the Beverly Hillbillies - in his iconic trilby.

Okay, make that TWO DVD/Blu-Rays. I hope Amazon won't run out before I order. ;)

Movie stairs have to have their face visible to the camera.

I think wearing a hat that way makes you look like a goof.

Just my opinion, and we each have one.

Mentioned earlier in this thread, I caught "The Boys in the Boat" over the weekend. What a great hat flick! Flat caps, boaters, straws and great felt fedoras.

It was refreshing to see the characters wearing hats in the 1930s that were period appropriate, and not factory creased.

I especially liked the hat worn by the main character's estranged father. A struggling carpenter during the Great Depression. Wonky brim, hole in the pinch. They got it right.

Great post! - Thanks!
It looks like the costume dept. really did their research on this one. I'll have to look for it.

What a hat! This is one big Western!

Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman from the 1945 movie, "Saratoga Trunk"

I recently re-watched the 1949 classic "Tension".
It's nearly impossible to say with any degree of certainty what make and model hat appears in any particular movie. Especially with the high volume of clones that popular models attracted. However, given the fondness of the Stetson Whippet with Hollywood actors of the late 40's, this is likely the hat seen throughout much of the movie. I would say, if you're a fan of the Whippet, this is one of the best "Whippet" movies of all-time!

It's not often that you get a glimpse of the liners of hats in movies. If you are like me (and I know you are because you're on this website), you are often left frustrated by not knowing with any certainty, the make and model of hats in movies.

I've included some pics here from one of my favorites - Phone Call From a Stranger (1952). It has an all-star cast which includes; Gary Merrill, Shelley Winters, Bette Davis, Hugh Beaumont and Craig Stevens.

This is one of the rare times I've had a good look at a liner in a movie. It occurs around the 47 minute mark.
It is the second hat that Gary Merrill wears in this one.

To me, it clearly looks to be a Cavanagh based on the liner.

Any thoughts??? And if it is a Cavanagh, does anyone know the model???

Researching this hat, led me to information on Cavanagh Hats and product placement, where I learned of the hat company's relationship with John F. Kennedy. I have recently posted some information/pics related to this topic in Hurricane Jack's Fedora Lounge thread titled "The Hats Of President John F. Kennedy".
