In a brazen attempt to rescue this thread...

Having a waistband that is NOT elastic makes for very comfortable shorts. They're also not as full as elastic topped shorts so they feel much "trimmer". There's no support, per se, but there is also less freedom; think boxer briefs that have streched out.
