I splurged on the Brooks Brothers tie backs and French backs and love them (I have one pair of each). They are expensive but are on a par with any of the designer underwear available! They are very comfortable.

There's also Vintage Skivvies. They produce a couple of different reproduction styles -- tie sides which are a copy of the US Army issue from WWII and another one from the 50s (also a little expensive)

Thanks everyone

It sounds like other people have found the same problems as I.
I too have wondered about the types drawers I had seen in vintage magazines but didn't want to pay the extra $.
Thanks for the site, Shindeco. It looks like a good supplier and the archive section is fun.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

I've tried many styles of underwear, but lately I have had good luck with John Henry boxers in Poly-Spandex. Got several pairs in black from Sears. They breathe well, don't bunch or ride up and hold their shape better than the cotton cousins. They almost qualify as a boxer-brief due to the body clinging style. The spandex will allow you to move with no binding and give some support.

I wore boxers for years, but ended up getting tired of them bunching up
in uncomfortable places when I sat down and so on. The last couple of years I've returned to Bonds briefs, which are very comfortable.

Boxers. Exclusively. I dont buy them. They seem to come to me as gifts. Father's Day produced three from Vineyard Vines. Mine all seem to have "cute" patterns. Hopefully I don't wind up in the ER with no coherent explanations possible.

French backs?

Can someone explain to me what a french back is exactly? Pardon my ignorance, but I'm new to all this.

Oh, and I wear white cotton boxers and white cotton t-shirts as underwear, and have for years.

My favorites for several years now have been Jos. A. Bank boxers. Oxford or broadcloth cottons, generously sized, and they don't bag until the elastic goes (usually takes two years).

My top of choice lately is the Hanes or Gap singlet (classy term for A-shirt or 'beater).

Thanks for the education. I can imagine those would be phenomenally comfortable. One day when I've put together a decent outer wardrobe I'll have to invest on some of those.

Edit : Any experiences with their comfort level as opposed to elastic bands like you find now?

I've worn Brooks Brothers Boxers for about ten years now. They are extremely comfortable and generously cut. Made of broadcloth with a wide elastic band which does not get too tight. Light blue or white only.I have a couple pairs of the French back and they too are very comfortable.

I think I am pretty physically sensitive, so bunching up is a complaint to me. My biggest complaint is tight waistbands though. Seems most modern boxers or briefs have very tight elastic waist bands which is very uncomfortable to me.

I have one pair of vintage probably from the twenties that is down to my knees. Funny. I willh ave to post a pc sometime.

Personally, I wear boxers under vintage wool because they are looser cut and a little scratchy otherwise. I want to have my thighs covered. I only wear boxers taht are pretty long.

Most of the time I wear jeans, or khakis or other jean cut or khaki cut cotton pants. They are snugger and softer so I find going commando the best option.

As far as color and cleanliness of undies, at risk of being crude or gross, I rinse after wiping and have not had a skidmark stain in years. Much more sanitary habit we could pick up form most of the third world.

Okay boys, no one has addressed this, so I will. I like the idea of those french boxers, and as I posted before, I used to wear boxers, but...

Let's say your out in public, still at a restaurant or out dancing, and your date is getting a bit...um...frisky. Boxers don't exactly offer 'helpful constriction' if you get my meaning. Briefs, on the other hand, seem to keep everything where it's supposed to be, in a sort of perpen...all right, is it me, or has anyone else had this problem with boxers?

Regards,

Senator Jack

I've noticed that I find briefs to be too restricting all around, but on those occassions such as this I find them unbearable. I need that extra "breathing room" or I'm far too uncomfortable.

Yes, but then everything is visible, isn't it? Quite a conundrum.

Yes, it can be one of the ultimate catch 22s. I usually find some angle where I can conceal it as much as possible, and hope my jacket does a decent job of covering up this sort of embarrassing moment. You're probably right about briefs doing a better job at concealment/containment, it's just an unfortunate compromise of visibility vs. comfort I guess.

Boxer briefs in darker colors. Briefs just don't look good to me or the women of my acquaintence and loose boxers do bunch up and, as mentioned, provide no "support".

scotrace,

Self-control applies to not hitting the criminally stupid, turning down dessert and excusing oneself to the restroom when "windy". There aren't enough nuns, baseball or sad memories on earth to restrain the other. :D
