i would like to start a thread where members discuss which hats they think are particularly suited to their jobs and why they choose to wear them to work. . . whether they be archaeologists, accountants or pimps.

i am a Financial Advisor and wear somber homburgs of grey, navy and black. occasionally wear borsalino como, but that's about as flashy as i have gotten.

DOUGLAS, for instance ....i know you are out there ....i notice you are wearing a suit in every picture in manhattan. what kind of profession allows you to wear your resplendent collection of hats?

anyone else?

I'm an mid-level administrator at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. That lets me pretty much pick and choose.

As a westerner, I can - and do - wear an Open Road with Cattleman's bash and it looks at home. I can wear an OR with a fedora bash and it works as nicely.

And I wear dress hats such as Whippets and Stratoliners all the time when it's not so darn hot. For the past few weeks, I've worn a Panama.

I don't think that most professions impose constraints so much as our own minds do.

I remember back in 1971 when I started my career, the national cpa firm I joined had offices that still required male staff to wear a fedora. My office was not one of them so I didn't get into hats until some time later. I don't, however, believe that there is a "hat" that pertains to my profession. Usually I just wear a Panama in the summer (unless it is going to be rainy) and felt in the winter where I try and match the color. :)

I'm a UNIX system Administrator and Team Leader and a freelancer. I'm not require to dress up, a not so formal attire is currently required at my working place, so I wear my Federation or my melegari during the winter and the panamas from bob (as soon as they arrive...)

I'm a training investigator, so I suppose the trenchcoat and fedora makes me look like your basic gumshoe from the 40's. Generally though, if I'm wearing my fedora, I'm not working-at least not in the field. You have to blend in, and fedoras aren't the best way to do that generally.

Land Surveyor. A fedora or a panama is a perfect shade fro the neck & head out in the field. I usually wear my Camtown out in the field since it provides plenty of protection and in the winter it keeps the head nice and warm.

Cheers!

when I was doing social work with at risk youth I wore a fedora all the time..Most always the same one..

I found it was a nice departure for the kids who were used to seeing males in specific types of garb. We would talk about the hat for a bit and then could move on to something else..It just kind of added something to the personality cause Lord knows needs all the help it can get..

I'm working now as a record manager in an insurance company, The role I'm in I can still come into work with a fedora and no one notices but there are pretty strict rules about fedoras in business these days it seems, they have their place but they have to stay in that place. No room for fun...

I'm an auditor (CPA) in an Office of Inspector General for a Federal entity. I read duggap's entry with some humor - I started out with major CPA firm (PW) in mid 70's and we heard that some AA offices still required hats - but that's all - never heard that they were 'fedoras'. Most of the time I audit contractor's compliance with contract pricing (advanced bean counting); sometimes I work with the Special Agents (investigators), but not often. I have not gotten any push pack regarding hats. For many years they were just wool/tweed 'driving' caps; I just bought my BB fedora in April and am wearing a straw milan during the summer. So far, the hats have always been at least as 'dressy' or 'formal' as my business attire and not the other way around (no ball caps, no ratty hats). I only have to wear a suit about 3 days a year now, so the fedora look dresses me 'up' and I would not expect to get any push back on that.

I write and draw comic books for a living, out of a studio in my house. So, I don't have a ton of reasons to go out and show off the hats. I just have to make reasons up... going to the bar, etc.

I'm a Police Officer, so me wearing any sort of hat out while at work would get me written up.

But, man, if I could look like Connery in "The Untouchables"...

Speaking of which, does anyone have any shots of that uniform?

What about your uniform cap? That's a hat, isn't it? In the old days, you could be written up for not wearing it. A police officer's cap was an important part of his uniform. These days, police officers don't wear a uniform cap much anymore. It seems to be a reflection of the times. These days, police officers only wear the uniform cap on special occasions. Only a few "old school" cops still wear the uniform cap when on duty. Many local police departments allow officers to wear a baseball cap with the word "POLICE" printed on it or the department's patch/emblem.

If you're in a plain clothes unit, it wouldn't make sense for your department to prohibit wearing a hat or cap when appropriate.
