I'm a Police Officer, so me wearing any sort of hat out while at work would get me written up.

I'm a Marine and I have to wear a hat (We call them "Covers") whenever I'm outside. I have been written up for not wearing one of the various covers I've been issued. I have a few fedoras and a Hamburg, which I wear when I can. But, I guess the best headwear the Corps has to offer is the classic
"garrison cover"

Modeled here by Capt. Joseph J Foss. circa 1942. (WWII Medal of Honor recipient.) It is a part of the Marine Corps Service Alpha Uniform. Pretty damn sharp if you ask me.

The News Hat.

I feel terrible.

I had no idea that there were so many of you unable to wear your fedora to work.

Up until last month I was a Morning Radio News Anchor. One day about two years ago my boss told me I wasn't being serious enough while doing the News and I should wear a suit and tie to help me "feel like a newsman."

Since I wasn't into the suit and tie thing at the time, I decided to buy a fedora on ebay and start wearing one again. (I wore a wool fedora quite often back in the 80s). My first was an olive green Dobbs. The boss and everyone at the station loved it, started calling it "the News Hat."

Now six felts and two straws later a fedora is part of my daily wear.

I've since moved from on-air to Production and my first task was to find a place to hang my hat in the production room.

Glad to see there are other accountants, like myself, on this forum. My first three hats just arrived at my house today. I bought 3 fedoras, including a gray Stetson, a brown Stetson, and a black Dobbs. The Dobbs is my favorite. I work for a mid-market regional CPA firm and our office is rather conservative, I basically wear a suit every day, except for Fridays if I am in the office and not meeting with a client. So, I thought that wearing a fedora to work would dress things up a notch. I think I am interested in trying a homburg someday, but these three fedoras are a great start. I also plan on buying a nice Dobbs straw fedora for next summer, since it won't be long before this summer is over.

I work in finance in NYC and despite the obvious conservative nature of the Street, no one dresses up in suits anymore except the I-Bankers,a few old timers, and interview candidates. God forbid a hat is worn, people think it is a prop. Alas, I wear my Fedoras during my off time, not that I am ashamed of my collection but I'd rather wear it when I go out on the town in my comfort zone, then make a statement at work.

I just one day decided to wear my hats to work. Of course it's easier at a university, especially an HBCU (Historicall Black College/University) where most of my coworkers actually like the hats. But I hadn't ever worn a hat, and one day started wearing one, and have been ever since.

They'll get used to it. Worst comes to worst tell 'em you're worried about the sun and UV rays while you walk to the office.

I hear you, but it just isn't worth it for me. Not in my business. Besides, I'd rather wear my hats on my time off, with a Michter's Rye Manhattan in reach, and my tie clip on smartly.

Semper Fi, brother. I used the standard term of "hat" due to not speaking in miltary circles or discussing military items.

Though I still call it a cover from time to time, depending on conversation...

I still have all of my Marine Corps uniforms, as well.

Am a law student and wear my sturdy panama or Resistol Straw cowboy hat during the summer. Hey, I live in Texas and drive a truck, so I can get away with the latter. Surprisingly, 99.99999% Texans don't wear cowboy hats.

For the winter, not sure what I will wear. Looking into getting a homburg or fedora. Been hitting the consignments and garage sales, but nothing piques my fancy.

I see more than my fair share of cowboy hats, but MSU's known for its ag programs. I get cowboy hat comments way more than I get indy remarks, even in my adventurebilt!

I always enjoyed irritating the other Marines around by referring to my covers as "Marine Hats" ("Has anyone seen my Marine Hat?" "Campbell!! It's a COVER!" "Aye, Gunny.")

I'm a law lecturer at one of the old university of London colleges. For casual jackets it's caps of some sort or other - but never a baseball cap - while a blazer, suit or something of that nature, it's preferably a fedora, at least one of the flat caps. As the office is for me mostly either a suits or (on most days I'm not teaching) a blazer/ slacks / shirt / cravat type environment, My preferred hat is now a fedora style, with the panama for the summer. I'll wear one of the cap styles with a more casual outfit, or at a push with a suit if the wind isn't conducive to a brimmed hat, or I'm liable to be spending a lot of time in and out of different inside places where a fedroa would be likely to get in the way terribly.

What about your uniform cap? That's a hat, isn't it? In the old days, you could be written up for not wearing it. A police officer's cap was an important part of his uniform. These days, police officers don't wear a uniform cap much anymore. It seems to be a reflection of the times. These days, police officers only wear the uniform cap on special occasions. Only a few "old school" cops still wear the uniform cap when on duty. Many local police departments allow officers to wear a baseball cap with the word "POLICE" printed on it or the department's patch/emblem.

If you're in a plain clothes unit, it wouldn't make sense for your department to prohibit wearing a hat or cap when appropriate.

In NYC, PO's wear traditional caps, especially if they walk a beat, which yes, they still do in Brooklyn where I work.
