Loungers in Shanghai

May be curious to know that the Soft Spinning Market (399 Lujiabang Lu) has a really good stall on the third floor (No. 340) that has a fantastic range of denim and canvas and a two-tailor team that is really good to work with. I've collected some bulletproof jeans and a rather fantastic shirt that are solid (they look every bit as thick and thoroughly stitched as a pair of Pike Bros which I own [and am not that impressed with as they're nice, etc., but the prices I feel are a wee bit steep], and set me back about thirty pounds per pair). They weren't even that fussed about asking if they could 'copy' them, as they reckoned they could meet the same standard fairly easily. After I've had these a few months, I'll update this in case I'm mistaken.

As the prices are very reasonable, I'm having them put together an overcoat in the thicker canvas that they stock which should be ready in two weeks.

What's name of the store?
'The Tread Guide'. I'm very impressed by them so far and am stomping about in the jeans to give them a proper test. What I like about them is that they sensibly line stuff (as opposed to just presuming that thinner linings are always acceptable) and the work feels substantial. And the buttons aren't coming off (the stalls that outsource to the quickie stitchers down to road are plagued by this- whereas the body of a garment is almost always well put together, buttons can be ... variable. One of the team sat down and really stitched the buttons on).

Sounds good. There are great tailors around in China if you know where to look and aren't seduced by the tourist novelty of having a suit "made and delivered to your hotel in 24 hours".

I'm told - for suits - "Dave's Custom Tailors" in Shanghai are Row quality for around GBP800ish?

Worth knowing about these places. I've not yet made it down to Shanghai, but it's on my hitlist for a future holiday - there and the AVG airbase in Guilin, which I think wasn't there when I last visited. (Did a beautiful River cruise, though.). If you got a great pattern worked out and they can do the grading, you could manage quite a nice little sideline with these folks!

"Dave's" is famous- they do great work. Joyce and Rita are my go to on the Bund, but you really have to get her to check the buttons are on firmly enough (their new 'finishing' guy is a grumpy, light worker and they've had difficulties: Joyce will re-stitch buttons so that you could abseil off them)... a suit from them is about 230 GBP, and good for work. Nothing beats HK, though.

China tailor made is superb by my experience. Will search for the address.
...see any leather there?
Yes, but you want Tony Leather in Shanghai. The Bund's Soft Spinning Market has places that do leather, but it's mall quality at best.

Hmmn... I have a British 1950s suit I love which is long past its best now; at £230 if the cloth is decent I could save a bit of money and have then run me up half a dozen copies.... Worth looking to build that into a trip!

Yes, Tony Leather has a taobao shop link somewhere on here that I'll post in a bit. There are several stores that are good on the bund (and they're all in the same [massive] building). PM me before arrival and I'll introduce you and get you the 'James' Friend Price'. :)
