Leather Ike

I won this while I was out. Other than that it looks like it's modeled on a battledress jacket or an ike jacket, what can you tell me about it. I hope it works, because I like the look.

Fantastic jacket. No labels remaining? New lining - looks like goatskin. It almost has a 70's feel until you look at the hardware.

You find the best stuff.

That would be a good one to try and make- I even have a couple to make patterns off of. I think an M1941 "Parsons" jacket would also be pretty cool in goat or horsehide.

I've noticed that there is a very fine line between authentic '40's 50's and disco '70's sometimes. The collar and cut have to be just right, and even then some of the genuine post war stuff is hard to tell from a distance. Once you get in close though the materials and hardware usually make it obvious (for those with discerning taste... )

It's all about what you wear with it when it comes to stuff like that, to give it a '40s or '50s look instead of disco. I think it'll look great with a tie and my battledress trousers.

Well- if in your leather jacket making you get around to something like this, be sure to post pictures, I'm sure it'll turn out great.

And I was kind of surprised to win it, myself. I stuck my bid in Friday night, I think, and it ended yesterday afternoon while I was still out, with only one other bid on it. It was listed as an a-2, which it isn't, so maybe that turned people off of it?

Turned out to be an excellent jacket, and it fits my dad perfectly. He ended up getting it, along with a vintage gruen as a christmas present. I kept the G-1, which is a bit more beat up.

The lining's looks like its been replaced at some point. The current lining has stitching marks where it looks like there was once a label. There are also stitch marks from where two large flapped pockets once were on the chest. Currently there are no pockets, inside or out. I'm guessing the outside pockets were removed some time ago, because the stitch marks are so faint. The auction photos pretty much show all the detail. It's amazing, though, just how short the zipper really is. Starts at the top of the waistband. Probably only six or seven inches long.

With the beard, Pa Dinerman reminds me somewhat of Michael Eavis...

Interesting jacket. It certainly does bear strong similarities to an Ike.... or to Canadian(?) officers' battle dress (not the regular British stuff which had a more traditional shirt-type collar). The belt closure is very BD in style. Definitely I would have thought aimed at the motorcycling community, given the short length and the fact that in leather the overall Ike style, epaulettes and all, has something of a vague stylistic resemblence to the Schott Perfecto style.... The biggest difference from that general style of motorcycle jacet is the placement of the zip at the centre and use of a traditional windflap... Very nice indeed. Not a style that I have seen anyone else reproducing either.

I am not saying these are exactly the same jackets - but close enough to demonstrate an alternative US AAF style. I like this guys individuality so much - I bet he was real poseur!

The 1947 date is a bit misleading -I believe it is just telling us what date the negative was received for archiving. The bottom left corner shows that the photo is of a 390th BG, 570th BS crew. The 390th flew out of Framlingham, and they left in August '45. The photo is definitely a wartime crew.

I think the ANJ-3 was identified as such in the WW2 A-2 Photos thread.

There is certainly a good range of jackets here. The Ike style like Dinerman's is my favourite simply because it is so unusual - clearly a private purchase! I love both it and DM's jacket which looks so cool on his Pa.
