Raylan does have a Hugo Boss overcoat but this one pictured above is not correct. It's kinda close but just not it. I have a Hugo Boss overcoat too but mine is not correct either as the one Raylan wore is REALLY, REALLY hard to find as I should know as I have been searching for it for YEARS............

Not sure what is actually the hardest one to find, the buckskin jacket or the overcoat (I actually call the overcoat the gunfighter coat)? Bot jackets are extremely hard to find and you have no idea how upset I was when this jacket came in and it was too small (really just in the sleeves)............ :(

Any of you guys done a Justified hat in black? I was thinking of cutting down the brim of my Resistol to 3 1/4 or 3 1/8. Was hoping someone had already done one and could post a pic.

Hey guys, I'm going to ask a question that has been asked before, so get ready to repeat yourselves (sorry). I've perused the forums on the Raylan Givens Justified hat, but haven't quite found the answer to the question that I've been wondering for a while. I think it's what happens when you have such a wealth of knowledge matched with broad, possibly a little unspecific questions. So, here goes:
I'm going to buy a Stetson Carson because I love justified, but don't want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a custom hat, want it to be a stetson, and like the look of the silver belly over the cattle tan, but I'm not sure what costume cut to get for the brim. I want the season 6 or season 1 look for it, where the brim is a bit wider than it was in other seasons. I agree that the standard cut doesn't look quite right (too much upward curl on the outer edge of the brim), but I'm not a fan of the overly short brim where they tried to make it look more like an open road.
Here's what I'm buying
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stetson-Cow...hash=item4ae66140b7:m:m3g6adjnvtHaeoP4wa4jtew

Here's what I'm looking to acquire

If 3 3/4 is standard, I'm guessing that I want is a 3 1/2 to achieve my goal. Any thoughts, input, or personal experiences in this will be greatly appreciated. Here's to the help in advance, and I hope that everyone had a fantastic independence day.

I have an older Stetson that is similar and I can’t remember if it has a 3” or a 3 ½” brim. I will check tonight. The originally used in the first season is the Stetson Carson that has a 3 ¾`brim. It has been noted in the media that they trimmed the brim down for the show. There is also this reference http://www.knudsenhats.com/justified.html that indicates it should be a 3 5/8`brim. I personally think it should be over 3” and no more than 3 1/2” to get that look from the photos. Here is a good video that unfortunately does not tell you the brim width.

With that said here is where it gets interesting. The look also depends on your own body makeup. Timothy (the actor) has a very slight frame but wide shoulders. So if you have wide shoulders you may need a wider brim, smaller shoulders smaller brim. Size matters as well. A co-worker here has a Akubra Cattleman. Same as me but his size is 57 and mine is 60. Makes a noticeable difference in the appearance of the brim. It looks noticeable wider on his hat but it’s the same width. He is also a larger man and the hat looks smaller on him then it does on me.

Long story short. I would go with the 3 ½ and take it from there. If it seems to wide, trim it a little.

Thanks Johnnycanuck and Jedwbpm. Very helpful!! Jedwbpm, what do you mean by current production? Show has been off the air for a few years now. Can you elaborate when you get the chance? Do mean final season?

Where is Moon? Wouldn't he threaten to merge this thread with the Justified thread by now? Or ask a question get and answer thread? He must have had a VERY good Independence day. :p;)

Johnny

Hah! It's merged now.

Yes I am very very bad. I just received small pics of the new straw hats for 2018 and will see them in person next weekend in NYC. I'll try to come around more often. As always been very busy. I moved from the east coast of FLA to the west coast.

Johnnycanuck, that is a really sharp look on you! I would have been worried that the brim would have looked to short when considering a 3 1/4 in purchasing, but as was said earlier, it's down to the individual, and that hat looks awesome on you. Thanks for all of the help guys. This was exactly what I needed. Anyone have any more pics of the Carson?

3 1/4 is what you want if you're going for screen accurate. His hat was a 7 1/4, if you're going much bigger then you might want to up that to 3 3/8 - 3 1/2. The different appearance over the years was largely down to the way the brim was shaped, the mid period where it looked shorter was because they raised it a little at the sides next to the crown before coming back down to the wave, earlier and later versions were flatter

Also consider that what you see in the mirror looks very different to seeing it on someone else, it always looks much bigger than it actually is. I was absolutely convinced at one point that his was 3 inch going by the mirror method until I saw some pictures of it on and realised it looks totally different from above. Always take some photos from a distance and see how it looks to everyone else before deciding what width is right for you

Hey, Johnny, which Justin sraw hat are you using here?

Late to the thread and show. Just started watching it. Have an old Stetson that needed reblocked but I don't have any blocks. But I do have a stiff as hell straw Justin cowboy hat. Instant block. Hope it turns out all right.

Johnny

I really like the way your hat turned out with your makeshift block
