is Bogart wearing two different hats in the same movie here?

One of my favorite Bogart films is Tokyo Joe. In fact, this was the movie that made me decide I had to own a fedora (or ten). Just recently I did some screen grabs on it, though, and in these shots, it seems Bogart is wearing different hats in different scenes. What do you think?

the degree of rake here seems a LOT steeper:

this angle makes it a bit difficult, but it seems to be maybe even a third hat. If not that, then it is at least quite different from the previous one:

Yeah, I'm with the "same hat" crowd. The pics are a little decieving because of the angles, but the crown almost seems higher on the right side in pic 2, and I've also noticed that with Bogey's "quick crease" look he didn't seem to make much effort for symmetry.

Same hat. Wardrobe is scrupulous about making sure things like hats are consistent throughout a film. On a pilot I've just finished wardrobe had three identical outfits for the presenter, right down to his shoes and socks, so I can't imagine a big studio slipping up on a hat.

I'd have to say it's the same hat in all three of your screen captures. In B&W film, colors are reduced to tones of grey and all three of these shots show the hat in the same tone of grey. This would lead me to think it was the same hat and if not, it was the same model and color in each one which would make sense considering they might have "back-up" hats for situations as might arise. The differences you see I would chock up to camera angles and lighting .

From what I've read, he used his own hats for most of the movies he starred in, especially after gaining stardom, so I don't think that the studio would have had a wardrobe department handling this one.

That's correct. You can see in a number of movies with EG Robinson, William Powell, Cary Grant, that they were the same hats even from one movie to the next to the next, playing different characters, so it seems very likely the hats are their own. But as we know of the way things are done in modern times, from the Indy movies for example, they had 12 hats available when they began filming. So in the opening sequence when Harrison Ford goes swimming with his fedora, they had eleven more when that one got messed up. Movie makers are a lot more meticulous about continuity in movies now than they were in the Golden Age, hence my question.

Tokyo Joe has numerous scenes called "process shots"...it is the "fake" background projected on a screen (not as sharp or clear as today's "blue screen"). The result in Tokyo Joe is that Bogart is being filmed on the sound stage with the background scene being a projection. This changes the scene as far as sharpness..and color/gray tones.

Your first screen grab is on the set, and the lighting is from above.
Second screen grab is also on the set, but the lights are at a different angle.
Third shot is the "process shot" with obvious shadow on Bogart's face, and the fake projection background.

Mr. Bogart likely wore the same hat during this movie. It looks the same to me.

This is an underrated film that I personally love . Bogie looks great in his fedora & A-2 combo in this movie!
