So far he is thinking Sprint. Not sure. Has till the end of the month to figure it out.

If he had chosen T-Mobile he could have kept it and just had it jail broken.

However, since Verizon and Sprint do not use SIM cards on their phones, none of their customers can have the possibility of using unlocked phones like that.

Also, isn't the price for an iPhone 8GB from Apple $399?

8 gig $399, 16 gig for $499 from the Apple online store. There was some announcement a few weeks ago about the physical Apple stores being completely out of stock and their just selling out remaining inventory online. But both prices will probably plummet when the new iPhone comes out shortly. But ATT's got a 5 year exclusive deal as the US provider that's still got 4 years to run. For the rest of the world, you may have more options as to carrier, but not for the US market. There are already sealed boxes in Australian stores that are guarded and not to be opened until Tuesday.

Apple tends to -sell- down their products to zero stock before a new release...so they haven't been -making- the old model for a while now....it just slowly but surely sold out...
