In which WWII army should you have fought?

The Red Army photographer goggles are easy to find (and cheap) in www.frontofrussia.com.
The french officer goggles are harder to find: they are british, early days of WWII. Really, the frenchmen soldiers of Division Leclerc used US goggles, but some officer, as the own Leclerc, used this pattern of goggles. Some years ago, there were a lot. The only way to purchased now a pair is, I believe, looking in E Bay and with good luck.

USA! (81%) A good number of the questions read as idealistic, even naïve. So preferably I'd have done best in the forces depicted in the contemporary movies, with intelligent fair-minded officers, fatherly wisecracking NCOs and cheerful folksy grunts (all with hearts of gold of course).

Except for a lot of young men in the occupied countries. They had a choice - sign up with the nazis and fight on the eastern front or get out and sign up with the allied forces.
(Third choice was stay put and do nothing.)

Not quibbling, but genuinely curious, I didn't think it was really much of a choice.

Many Waffen soldiers were trapped in situations that gave them little or no choice.

I know a significant number of Falange volunteers came over to fight on the eatern front, but my anecdotal, cursory history is filled with stories of men left with no choice.

Join the Waffen or go to a camp; join the Waffen or the family suffers; join the Waffen or lose your home.

National defenses grabbed everyon they could; the Russian conscripted anyone with feet.

I know some men went to fight base don ideology, but statistically wasn't that a very small number? Please correct me if I am wrong...

The questions are quite transparent to anyone with historical military knowledge of the era. "Do you like uniforms" is totally non-American but answered yes by Germans no doubt. And the stuff about do you believe in using massive amounts of ammo versus whatever it said about steady, accurate firing is completly telling. While the US and GB to a large degree employed automatic and semi-auto weapons at all levels the Germans and Japanese were using rifles of 50 year old technology.

I can only give you some - not very flattering - figures from Denmark 1944.
There were more young danish men fighting with the SS on the eastern front than there were people in the resistance.
And they all volunteered! Nobody or nothing forced them to go.

Of couse some came from the winterwar in Finland, where it was a noble cause to help Finland fight the mighty agressor, The Soviet Union.
And - when Finland backed out - it was very easy to continue that fight in the german army.

Many of the young men also came from ultra conservative homes, and they were brought up to be against socialisme and everything beyond that.

A certain percentage of them came for fun, because of the adventure and because they had nothing more important to do with themselves - such as a job, family etc.

And - yes - some came bacause they turned nazis. Simple as that.

Of course in may 1945 there were many more people in the resistance (many joined up in those days!!! ) than there were danish SS soldiers. They suddenly dissapeared.

I think you' ll see the same picture in many occupied countries in western Europe. Norway, Belgium, Holland France, etc...

"Ich war kein Nazi! Ich war gegen die Kommunisten!"

I wonder how many Americans might have joined the Waffen against the Russians if the Germany had made a separate peace with Britain and the U.S. had never enterd the European theater.

1950- Amrerican Expeditionary troops volunteer in the Waffen SS to bravely fight the Communist hordes, protecting Europe from the godless menace of Stalinism....

Poland? I didn't know they had a Navy in WWII. Any thinking warrior wants to be in the Navy after all. lol

Interesting. I too would be in the Polish Armed Forces.
Just for grins, I answered all questions as fully agreed and had a tie-breaker question. I was still in Poland. However, when I answered all as fully disagree and then a tie-breaker, I was French, Free French, and French Resistance.
When I answered straight down the middle and then a tie-breaker, I was in Poland. When I answered in a zig zag pattern and then a tie-breaker, I was in the U.S. Army. It is interesting to note that each time you go back and retest, the questions are automatically scrambled so they don't always occur in the same order.
Of the nine tie-breaker questions, the army I was in depended on which question I thought was the most true.

Spitfire- yeah by that time the SS was staffed by 40% non-Germans. Most people have no idea. Also the SS has some 12-14 "departments" as it were. many were involved in esoteric things like Himmler's archeology nonsense and the myriad logistical support functions that assisted only 2 branches which actually saw any combat.
