Not many female who-would-you-be to choose from, are there? And Ma Barker didn't have the fashion sense.

Pretty Girl Floyd? lol

Anne Bonny disappeared from the British prison system after her capture, instead of getting hanged like most pirates, so she has that in favour. lol

Wow, I haven't seen a thread wreck like this in a long time...and besides the whole :deadhorse issue...

Celtic, I think your concerns have been voiced in the past by other members, much in agreement with your position that there seems to be a sense of an elite status or condescending regard present. In any case, I do believe that the topic has been covered and I think it's definitely a result of growing pains as well as an inherent flaw (albeit an acceptable flaw) of this board. Although I was not present for its inception, I have determined through much review that this board originated from quite humble means; thus, there may be a hardened clique present. However, as I'm sure most will attest, this board far from the nastiness present across other forums of its age and variety.

That being said, I would hope all remember that the civility of this Lounge is possible only through the collaboration and determination of a handful of individuals that may or may not have the opportunity, or perspective, to catch every underhanded or hurtful remark. I know that no one is suggesting they catch everything (or anything), but I believe that the camaraderie one finds here often has us taking our little community for granted and forgetting that we are fortunate to be able to speak of any topic as freely as we do without the constant trolling and flaming present on the web.

It's difficult to suggest that someone avoid a topic simply because they disagree, especially in the case of a topic which may create some sort of emotional or intellectual contreversy (no matter how small). We are left to our own discretion on whether or not to post our contrasting views in a thread specifically set up for a particular group.

I had posted earlier with my dissent on the topic and perhaps I should have moved on to another thread. I believed my input was merely that; a feedback that moved the discussion in some positive (or at least not negative) direction. Perhaps I should have reworded my presentation.

In any case, these issues are reoccuring and sparse. I know I speak for the majority in saying that everyone is as welcome as anyone else. Even some of the "vets" have had to eat crow. It's a part of this forum's life cycle and it's one of those things what makes this place so interesting. The topic was good enough for everyone to hop on, and in this place, that's pretty good. How many topics have fallen flat on their face because they're left in the dust? Alot. It's nothing personal, it just happens that way.

So [huh]

Let's try to keep on keepin' on like one big dysfunctionally functional family. :cool2:

And I'm throwing a few of these in for good measure...

Touche.
Points taken.;)
But, my initial understanding is that this was the "If you HAD to be a historical mobster, who would you be..." thread, where you actually voiced a choice (presuming you are required to do so), and not the "If you had to be a historical mobster, Don't Answer the Question but Please Give Us You Opinion of How You Abhor Violence and the Veneration of Criminals and Think that this Whole Thread is Vulgar and in Bad Taste" thread...
I must have missed something here...;) :)

Look at it this way: if someone had titled a thread as "If you HAD to be a historical lyncher or rapist, who would you be ...", would you have blamed people for voicing their opinion about it?

This is one of the points I was speaking to, by the way.

Had someone posted a thread titled, "If you HAD to be a historical child murdering maniac, who specialized in the dismemberment of all that is sacred to this country, who would you be?" (sorry, I have to take liberties and paint even more colorful pictures than those preceding me, for boredom sake), I would expect to see a FEW off-topic posts and I would expect others to understand why.

I don't believe this situation is much different. But what do I know?

Few more for good measure...

The idea that everyone should leave threads they don't agree with 'alone' or not post because they have an irrelevant (and who decides if its irrelevant anyhow?, besides bartender types) opinion......sort of goes against the 'Discussion Board' idea.....

If someone has wasted 3 minutes to come into a thread they obviously feel their opinion on its topic is important enough to waste that time...it was important enough of an issue to them to say 'wow, I don't like folks glorifying that, I think I shall express that, as maybe they don't realize the impact of the topic'

and while sure, not everyone posts to every topic...when people do, their opinions are not irrelevant, if they have decided to share.

Otherwise this place becomes a 'only post to threads you agree with' sort of place....not a discussion board.

I think there is a bit of a difference between disagreeing with others, or the basic premise of a thread, and the thread itself. For example, if someone posts a thread that says three piece suits are the best suit there is, or a good suit can only be made in blue pinstripe, or rockabilly is the best music from the past, then it would be apretty boring thread if only people who agreed weighed in. Some healthy disagreement would be key.

But to disagree with the nature or premise of the post is different. If you find it offensive or do not think it is appropriate for the lounge, then write to a bartender and ask them to remove it. Otherwise, find a thread where you can contribute to the topic of the thread.

Next time someone posts a thread on western swing, I will not post a response that says "I don't like music and f ind it offensive to my ears, and don't care to have an opinion on which form of vintage music I like best."

One possible solution (among several) is for a thread's creator to attach the phrase "Please Don't Express Disagreement with This Thread's Premise" to the title.

.

Yes, I am sure that would work. (sarcasm) If there was any way to derail a thread, that would be it. You would end up with a long list of posts about how they shouldn't have to keep silent and it is their right to speak up and bla bla bla.

:) good point, but how are some of these mobsters any different from christopher columbus? columbus's history has also been watered down or romanticised. in school they dont teach you about the rapes and murders that him and his men commited... but then people celebrate his birthday as a national holiday. how are his hands any cleaner than most of these mobsters? i guess its just perspective.

Yes.

In any case, the reason why this thread has attracted 1,573 views (and counting!) is NOT because of its title.

Well, it isn't. BTW, did you know that in Latin America and parts of the Caribbean, it is NOT celebrated as a holiday, but as a day of mourning? Even the name is different: instead of "Columbus Day", it's essentially called "Indigenous and Mixed Races Day."

Marc, you are a learned and respected Lounger, and I bow to your eloquence.:)

However, to answer your question (if it were indeed a thread topic), I would follow my own advice, and pass the thread by and offer no judgmental opinion, or at least have a 'read-only' perusal, just so I know which Lounger's to steer clear of!:D

Tony "Joe Batters" Accardo

I can't believe that I forgot to mention his nickname :eusa_doh: ; every mobster needs one. Accardo received his from Al Capone for an act which he performed (though commonly attributed to Big Al) at a business dinner.

I respect your way of handling it. I wish I could be as level-headed, but such a thread would unleash the crusader in me. (Literally: my last name comes from a French ancestor who was knighted in battle while on a Crusade -- unfortunately.)

Wow! Where? In Chile, by any chance?

BTW, Fedord Spaniard, if this thread has inadvertently turned out to be your "trial by fire," then I reckon you've comported yourself with flying colors. You have guts, are good-humored and have staying power. You're now well and truly acclimated. Congratulations and welcome, buddy :)

I disagree with the crusades and would not want to be any famous crusaders;)
